    Woodies.

My grandfather was an antique boat collector, had 45 of them. My dad has a '72 Century Coronado with a 440 in it. We had a collection of marine 318's (Fury 190's) from the 60's, a Chrysler straight-8 from the 50's, and a pile of I6's that were labelled as "Century" engines, but were manufactured by Chrysler corporation.

Of course Gray was another big manufacturer, we had a Gold Cup race boat powered by a Gray Fireball.

Chris-Craft of course made their own engines, but Minette boats were often powered by whatever suited the application.

We had a few old Ford engines from back in the day, including a marine interceptor and a Lincoln V12.

We had nothing Chevy, the adoption of Chevrolet engines in wide-spread marine application seemed to coincide with the adoption of the stern-drive.

Perhaps GM was cutting Mercruiser and OMC a good deal or something......

    God only knows.

Yeah lots of late 60s, early 70s boats had Chrysler Marine power. 318 and 383 engines seemed to be more common but there were 340s and 440s as well. We had a 1968 Donzi with a Holman-Moody 302 in it bolted to a Volvo sterndrive.

Chris-Craft often used modded Olds or Chevy engines. I know a Chris-Craft 350 (chevy) was the other common option on the early Donzi for example.

I wonder what year Chris-Craft starting using other company's motors? Our boats, the newest Chris we had was a 48.

Unknown, earliest CC I ever worked on was a 60s model, and it came originally with a RH 283 Chevy motor. It was bad and the owner replaced it with an RH 350. Not sure the exact year but it was the first year that they made a 26 foot in fiberglass, I want to say about 1966?

Perhaps it coincided with the widespread adoption of valve-in-head engines, as all the Chris motors we have are of the flathead valve-in-block design. I'm wondering if they ever made an OHV engine of their own? Maybe that was the reason for them adopting the Chebster engines.
