    transmission fluid ... everywhere



    '91 GM. A lot of fluid on the belly of the car, up around the transmission dipstick tube and back of the engine. Smoke coming from the transmission dipstick tube (I think). All fuids on the car check out at the proper levels. Trans isn't slipping. I'll know more tonight after I get it up on the ramps. Too hot outside to mess with it now. Just had it towed home.

      Sounds like maybe one of the cooler lines popped a leak or something

        same thing happened to me recently on my 89 CV LX. turns out OD band was slipping after the transmission got hot and under heavy load (up hills, lots of weight, etc) this caused the fluid to get hot and it started pooring out of the front pump seal. car drove fine if OD was locked out.

        it is possible the dipstick seal is leaking, but not that much fluid is gonna come out of there.

          If it's the cooler lines those fittings are pretty cheap to replace. And easy.

              Yes, they go to the radiator which factory also have radiator cooling lines in it. They are located on the passanger side. Two obvious metal pipes that look like really big brake lines (about 5/16" diameter) The ones that come out from just behind the dip stick tube.

                  that's what I figured, i replaced mine last time i put the tranny in a couple months ago. They are easy to replace on the car as well. Use of quick disconnect for them. they my not look like it, but if you can get the tool, well, you have to get the tool. lol. It's a small deal though. All it is is something that fits aroung the piple and slides inbetween the pipe and the fitting, and the pipe will ust pull out of it. Then unscrew the fitting from the tranny and install the new ones. Then just push the pipes back into the new ones. DONE!

                    Mine didn't slip and it was blowing fluid out of the dipstick.

                    Prolly is the cooling lines though

                      Got the '91 up and found that the passenger side of the car is soaked and the driver's side is dry. It almost looks as if the trans fluid sprayed to the outside of the car. The top cooling line fitting is soaked, but the bottom is dry. Do you guys think that the top line connector is the problem? Is there an o-ring or anything inside there? Will pulling the top fitting drain fluid from the trans?

                      Blaze, what fittings are you talking about? These don't seem to require any special tools.

                        Hmm...might just be able to take them apart and telfon tape 'em. We kinda assumed they were the quick disconnect ones...

                          Mine are the same as his, just screw in. I'm guessing that's probably the problem is that top fitting mang

                            I pulled the top line out and put teflon tape on the threads. The o-ring inside the connector piece appeared to be in good shape. I'll test drive it tomorrow and go from there. I really don't see how it could have leaked to begin with. I'm wondering if it's the gasket on the trans fluid pan that may be leaking on that side.

                              Yeah I guess those are not the quick disconnect ones. Also, on a car if something leaks everything behind it will get soaked. The trans lines are at the back end of the wet area. I find it hard to belies that a leaky trans line would cause the antire front of the tranny to get wet.

                              I would take some time and clean it up under there. Spick and span, then you will be able to tell where it is coming from.
