I honestly have always thought it was expansion and contraction from heat cycles

what about headers that loosen up that have individual primaries?

some of it is expansion, but when the gaskets blow constantly, its usually some bigger problem. I used to replace them every couple months on my car until I dropped the headers off to the machine shop to be checked out. He milled them flat, and its been 2 years since I had to touch it. Not even running loctite on the bolts, they actually have antiseize on them. Individual flanges can have misalignment too. If you've ever had to fight a set of Mac headers on, you'll know what I mean. They can be twisted so there is more pressure on the top side of the gasket than the bottom, etc. SBC headers are sort of like this, the center ports are together, but the ends are sometimes individual.

Use Ultra Copper from permatex on the paper gaskets with locking headder bolts. Problem solved. As for the valves... The only thing that will fuck them is if the get hit with really cold air or water right after shutdown. You can run with the ports wide open and it won't hurt anything.

I've made both man and machine cry.
            lolz I bet you have.

Anyhoo, cold air would fuck the valves up if the ports were open but I doubt your issue would mess anything up. Just sound a little shitty thats all.

I personally dont recomend paper gaskets at all. if you must run a gasket, I prefer copper, they are reusable and never blow out; if you absolutely have to have a gasket, and your too cheap to spend $40-50 on copper, at least get a felpro with a metal core.
imho with a paper gasket you are setting yourself up for failure
