Some how I seem to have too much oil, about 1/4 inch over the safe mark.
Is that too much? Crank hitting the oil?

80,000 gallons is too much.
1/4" over 'full'? I wouldn't panic, unless you drive upside down a lot. If you do, then that extra 1/4" of oil might be a reason for alarm.
If you are really worried about it, you might check a local quick-lube, as they have vacuum devices to pull oil out....and can measure how much is removed.

car only needs 5 qts of oil. many places try to do my oil change and say my car took 5 1/2 qts. and i say you better get the half qt. out.... i tell them that it has a double sump pan, so it all depends on how the oil settles into the pan as to how it reads on the dipstick.
Well, now. This seems like a good time to start something here. On both my 89 CV, and my 89 GM, 5 qts. shows up as 1 qt OVER on the dipstick. I know that I have the right amount in, so I just put a notch at the REAL full mark. I have not had any issues with either car.

There is a TSB about this I think. Basically they made a bunch of screwed up dipsticks in the 80s. I had one on my car that I got from a donor in the junkyard. Someone had already made the notch on it.

And all this time I thought I was just overfilling it. I guess I've been getting it too low for years.

I have an '89 Grand Marquis and it has the original owner's manual. In that manual it says when you do an oil change and first add the correct quantity (5 qts.) of oil, the dipstick should read about where the "F" is in the word "Full" which is above the cross-hatched area. It also says that you don't need to add any oil until it reaches the "Add" mark, and that you should maintain the oil level within the cross-hatched area.
i rarely check the stick on a box when doing an oil change......most of them are off......when you do an oil change, add 5 qts, run it a little, let it settle in the pan and check it.....that is the new full mark lol
