remove your fuse panel cover and have a look at the white plastic clamp holding the indicator wire to the steering column... they are usually broken, and will throw them off.
Usually you can just use a zip tie to snug up that clamp and all is well.

+2 for the zip tie. They all break after awhile. You can see mine is zip-tied as well. Just get it into position, put the tie on, and you're set.

hell yeah. That zip tie got me through inspection. The car actually failed for that stupid shift indicator not working right.

Is it the wooden bezel that sits oddly? If you get a chance to snap a picture of it, I might be able to figure out whats off.

hhmmm... probably anything you can do to put a little more tension on it would work... put it in "N" (set the Brake !) and wiggle the cable near the clamp, you will see it move... try to get it right and hold it with something

adjust it. Loosen the screw a bit, turn the collar so the needle lines up where it belongs, and tighten the screw again.

Naa, it never stops but its to be expected on an older car right? I'd love to see how some of the newer cars age. For the valve covers, you might just want to see if the bolts are just a bit loose. My pass. side was leaking and I even had smoke from it getting onto the exhaust. My dad just tightened the bolts very slightly and it stopped. The $9 Ebay door lock actuators will be your friend.

20 year old valve cover gaskets should be replaced. tightening them will work for a while, but you stand a chance of pinching the gasket and braking it, then it will leak more. the door lock problem is most likely a worn out piece of plastic bushing/rod connector or loose rod.
