    Bumper cover on a box...

How do you remove a bumper cover on a box? I know there is the small rivets of whatever they are that holds it on, but how do you remove them? Are they a one time thing, that you have to replace, or are the re-usable? And if they are re-usable, how do you remove them without tearing them up? I found a replacement bumper for my car, and the bumper cover is perfect, So I thought I would get that, too...

The bumper is the higher trim level bumper, with the small vertical rubber "Bumper guard" looking things... but it will do for now, until I can find a low trim level car. The one I WAS going to get, of course got crushed... (The police package one, that I was getting loads of parts off of... which they said they WOULDN'T crush...) Of course, that one had the correct bumpers on it... In fact, they crushed EVERY one of the 88 thru 91 Crown vics! I was sooo pissed! I told the guy behind the counter they were idiots! So they just lost at least $50.00 for the bumper, and about $35.00 for the bumper cover, not to mention the other interior parts I still wanted off the car.

on my 88 it's really easy. there's a dozen or so bolts on the back side that strap the chrome to the real bumper with clip-nuts on the chrome. Take all those bolts out and then pull the cover off.

Got the bumper and the filler panel... For $50.00 not bad, as both are in excellent condition...

What made me mad was the reason they crushed all the cars... they needed to clear the center aisle (Guess where all the Crown vics were?) So they could install light poles, so they could install "security" lights, so their cameras would work better.... (The yard isn't in the best of neighborhoods) So instead of moving them over to one side, install the poles / lights.. then put them back, no, lets just crush them! And of course ALL the Crown Vics they had were in that row... including some of the newer Crown Vics... all in all, about 10 cars... GGRRRR!!!!
Needless to say I got the bumper from a DIFFERENT yard... They said ALOT of people were coming in complaining about the other place... I don't know what they did before they bought the junkyard... but they aren't much in the way of business!!!

Also, if anyone needs to remove the "bumper filler" on a box, go underneath and cut the plastic "rivets" off underneath and pry the bumper cover up carefully to pop it loose. It uses the plasitc "rivets' that work by pushing in a small pin in the middle. Which spreads the underside out, to lock it in place... sort of like the ones under the hood, for the headlight / grille area. If you are careful, you can get it loose with out taking the tailight / extensions off the car, but you will have to do that to re-install it on the car.

I am guessing this discussion deals with 88-91 cars because I have no idea what is going on!

junkyards around here close at night and only have cameras to watch for people throwing parts over the fence... at night for security of the place they have electrical fences with warnings stating this to keep people out

On the 79-87 you have to take the entire bumper off the car, by removing the 6 nuts that hold it onto the frame horns. Then removing the dozen or so bolts/clip nuts on the top and bottom that secure the inner support structure to the Bumper, then it will come apart. The only thing that the plastic rivets are holding on the 79-87 bumper is the filler piece that goes between the bumper and grille/headlight bezels, which won't come out until you have the bumper apart anyway.

Strange. I had all bolts and clips. No plastic rivets.

the only thing the plastic rivets were holding on my MGM was the plastic airdam (air-lip) on the bottom of the bumper.

Seems I've seen it both ways. Also seems that's at least sometimes because the plastic rivets on mine tend to break or go missing after I've had the thing apart once.

Is there no place that sells the bumper covers new? I woke up one morning and my car was up a tree in my back yard (damn Jagermiester). Kinda want to fix it up a little.

there is basically no aftermarket/new bodywork available for boxes.
