    Deeper transmission fluid pans

Are there any benefits to running a deeper pan on the transmission? At some point, I want to replace the stocker with a pan that has a drain plug. I was looking at a pan on Ebay that even had a machineable boss for a temperature sensor. It was 4" deep, and it also had aluminum fins on the bottom. It was also $149! :geek2: If there is no tangible benefit, I'll just hold out and get a chromed FRPP pan. There's one currently on Ebay with a Buy-It- Now of $32.

    Discuss away.

I might run one on the vic. I put a tranny cooler on the towncar so I just added a $5 drain plug on my pan.

      Summit AOD Pans

Note that the summit brand and the FRPP "brand" are identical except for the "Ford Racing" stamp. And the price through summit is the same as your Ebay auction for the ford racing one. The summit pan which is identical is like $26.

you can replace the drian plug in those with a temp sensor with an adapter - thats what I plan to do. Of course it will be subject to road hazard since its sticking strait down - but shouldnt be an issue unless you go off-roading or like to run over snowbanks like boxman

A deeper pans allows you to run more fluid which will run cooler. And an aluminum pan helps get rid of the heat quicker.

Anything you can do to keep the trans fluid cooler the longer your trans will live.

You think running a deeper pan, along with a transmission cooler, will overcool the fluid?

I serously doubt it, although Im sure there is an optimum temp range for aod's to be at. Might just take longer to get to temp.

Too cool is much better then too warm! Heat is what kills most auto transmissions.

Got a big B&M cast aluminum pan that holds 4 extra qts.

Id stay away from chromed pans. chromed steel has a tendency to hold heat in, a as-cast aluminum pan will dissapate heat much faster.

Agreed. Aluminum is a much better conductor of heat and makes a better heat sink than steel. That said, I personally think a transmission cooler up front is a better use of your money than a deeper trans pan.

                        :stupid:

The cooler is going to hold about a quart or more fluid anyway, just as a bigger pan would.

the B&M is damn near 4" deep internally.
