will the 5.0 out of a 86 TC plug and play into my 88 GMW. can get a low mileage engine for $300 put it is in a TC.

Yes, its the same gutless motor you currently have. Change the throttle body to the one from the 88, the throttle lever on an 86 is slightly different and the TV cable won't connect to it. No difference worth talking about otherwise.

thanks gadget , i knew someone would have the answer. its not the engine i wanted but for the money it will do for now. my son is driving me crazy to get it back on the road so he can drive it when he gets his permit in a few months. so it will do for now and when i find the engine i want it will go in the wagon, with a few mods done first!!!

86 should be OK with that, but I'd re-gasket the thing while its out. Intake, valve covers, anything else that looks weepy. Much less painful to do out of the car.

What year did the shitty nylon gears start and end? Just curious. Otherwise, yup, trading one LoPo turd for another is basic with the exceptions mentioned.
Mostly ended in 85 with a brief resurgence on some 87's and extremely randomly after that point. I know I've seen an 88 that had one jump. Its sort of impossible to tell, I think every now and again someone would find one of the shit gears laying around in the store room and chuck it on an engine. Mostly starting in 86 they were the good gears though.
