Intermittent stall on idle/deceleration on 84 CFI TownCar

Ive had this little issue for a while now. My daily driver, 84 Lincoln Towncar 91XXX miles, has had a few hiccups since i had to replace the head gaskets.

I torqued every bolt to the best of my ability, but some of the rear cylinders needed an angled elbow socket adapter (im thinking it through off the reading?). Anyway, so she runs in Park just fine, she sound like shes missing on occasion (it is amplified by a busted exhaust pipe to muffler weld, rattle rattle rattle), but it is only in Drive that she stalls. Ive went to town with a few cans of starting fluid looking for vacuum leaks, but i cant pinpoint any obvious spot. This issue seems to have grown; just today on my morning commute she stalled completely 3 times, all at a full stop at a light. Starts right up again of course, but it is a problem id like to fix.

Anyone have any tips/leads/ideas on the matter? Thanks!

Check the condition of the sockets for the two relays that live on the driver's side fender. If they are crappy, it can cause the fuel pump or the ECM to kick in an out randomly. If you haven't, check the timing and make sure it holds steady. If the marks dance around, it probably needs a timing chain. If the ignition parts and fuel filter of an unknown age, take care of that too. If all of that checks out, it may be the ignition pickup and/or ignition module getting flaky. The pickups can sometimes go bad with heat and cause intermittant problems like this.

Also, you may need to adjust the idle speed. Its semi-automatically controlled but if its too low it may not compensate properly. Can't totally recall where it is, but I think its one of the screws at the base of the plunger solenoid thing on the driver's side of the CFI unit. It moves the whole plunger forward or backwards if I remember right. Idle should probably be around 700 rpm, but it would be printed on the emissions label under the hood too.

The two relays look good, the timing im sure is right and steady (i had issues after i pulled the intake, so ive learned that lesson the hard way haha). I have heard the TFI modules do go bad rather easily, specially from early EEC IV cars (such as my own), i suppose i should pull one out of a late 80s TC at the junk? You are indeed right about the plunger/throttle kicker, and i messed with the idle. Raised it a little, sounds better thats for damn sure, but it seems like shes still missing on occassion. Could just be me, but ill know after a good long commute tommorow!

I'd go for a new TFI and new pickup if there is doubt. Used ones can be questionable. If you don't have a press to get the distributor gear off, you may be better off with a reman distributor vs a pickup. You need one with a cast iron gear if you go that route. Ditto if you pull a junkyard distributor. The distributor itself is the same from 1984-1991, but the gear changed in 1986. If you mix them up, the gear on the camshaft will go away and re-distribute itself in your oil pan in very small pieces.

My first Lincoln was an '84 and it had strange issues like that, and it turned out to be the wiring to the throttle position sensor. I only noticed it because I moved it while the engine was idling and it stumbled, and I discovered the wires there to the sensor were intact looking but internally had failed somehow. I cut about 2 feet out of it and replaced that section and the car ran like a top the rest of the time I owned it.
