    Cleaning EFI Engines

I am not so afraid of cleaning the lopo because that's coming out in the near future. However, my 4.0L in my Ranger is going to stay until it dies. So, I need to degrease and power spray the driver's side inner fender and that side of the engine, due to a possible power steering hose leak. The truck was rewired and a lot of the wires, terminals, and plugs are on the inner fender. They were covered with p/s fluid yesterday. I would like to replace the hose and then degrease the fender. Can I do this to the wires and such? Without having any issues?

    Thank You

I would disconnect/pull back as much of the wiring as you can before you spray, working around the wiring that's left. Then just wipe the oil off the wires/connectors, then wipe again with a rag wet with electric device spray cleaner (it exists). Then clean out each connector with the spray, blow dry, then put a dab of di-electric grease on each prong and a thin smear of it around the outside of the male end of each connector plug.

But that's just me. Factory connectors can withstand a mild pressure spray, but if there are a lot of crimps and connectors exposed to the elements I'd be more hesitant.

I've always just used the engine cleaner at the do-it-yourself car wash. I have no idea if that can possibly be bad though.

Over the years I've cleaned a lot of engine compartments by dampening them with a fine soft spray, covering them with something like fantastic or 409, letting it sit until it starts to evaporate, and rinsing with a still fine but somewhat harder spray. Very dirty maybe repeat a couple times starting it between.

It's not steam clean but it does do quite a bit. I've been fortunate to never have a dead car afterwards but might just be lucky. Ymmv.

electric device cleaner... contact cleaner works as well.

simple green and the works also work but have very potent fumes.

I have some aerosol contact cleaner. I also have ZEP degreaser as well. Here are a couple pics of the mess. It looks greasier in person. THe camera isn't picking it all up.

You guys are too gentle. Douse the shit out of it with Simple Green and go to town with an electric pressure washer. If it doesn't run when you're done, something was messed up anyway. Contact cleaner is like 6 bucks a can and it leaves nasty residue behind when it evaporates.

Ah that's not so bad, I was picturing a mess of loose wires and exposed crimp terminals everywhere.
Pressure washing isn't really terrible, but I'd try not to soak the distributor and alternator. You'll be surprised how much of that mess will just wipe clean with a rag. I usually do that for the heavy oily dirt (dry dirt doesn't wipe up), then just wet everything down and let some foamy cleaner soak in for a while, then hit the fenders/rad support with a big bristle brush, then go back with a smaller brush for any nooks and crannies you want to clean. If its gunky enough, pressure washing is the only thing that will get the gunkiest of the gunk. Layered up greasy/oily grime/dirt is almost impenetrable to any cleaner unless you physically scrape off the heavy stuff first.
I guess it really depends how much time you have and how picky you are.

Yup I was taught early how to clean a motor Lol! Even carbureted cars.. I agree with gadget just blast that shit.. Simple green and purple power work wonders as well as Greased Lighting but if you feel like making it a project go get a couple cans of gunk and Deuche the whole motor..
