    EFI or HO?

Excuse my ignorance, for I am a diesel mechanic and dont get much work on petrol V8 engines.

I recently bought a complete brand new injection system for the 5.0. It was a cheep buy off eBay (£55 or $90) and I collected it on saturday (230 mile round trip).

Everything is there. Manifold, injecters, sensors, throttle body... he even gave me a fairly new alternator and a new timing chain that he didnt need anymore, very nice of him!

One thing I have noticed is the plate on the top of the inlet plenim reads 5.0 HO. Where as the one on my car says FORD EFI. Can anyone explain the difference? Im guessing HO means High Output? Will it bolt straight on, and is it going to be different in power/responce/economy etc?

    Thanks in advance

      This is what ive bought

from what I can see in the stickies, theres lots of different things to do along with all this lot above... right? Can i just swap all this stuff over and be ok, or do I need other bits for the engine to make it work?

HO does indeed mean High Output.

The intake is 2 piece; the lower is the same between the SO (standard output) and HO. The HO upper intake is what is different.

There is lots of information about the HO swap in the sticky link above. In short, some folks do a partial HO swap, and change the upper intake, TB, etc to the HO stuff. A complete HO swap involves the HO upper, TB, etc, as well as the heads (E7s), injectors, and HO camshaft. THis would also require changing the governor in the transmission, and several other small things covered in the sticky.

You can use what you have just fine. You will have to modify the throttle linkage on the mustang TB, bore a stock EGR spacer to size (the mustang one wont work) and flip around some vacuum nipples due to the reversed orientation.

Since your car is already EFI, you do not need to swap the lower intake, they are the same. Its still not a bad idea to remove it to do the gaskets at that time though.

Also, since your are not using a HO ECM and camshaft, you must use the stock grey injectors.

Thats a little clearer. To make full use of this, I would need Cylinder heads and a HO Cam from a mustang. This lot that I have has injecters fitted, but would need to use my EFi ones. Doesnt sound too much work then to get it all fitted. Cheers fellas.

I dont know if the heads help all that much E7s and E6s flow about the same out of the box. The E6S are a bit faster burn. The only SBF 302 heads that flow better are the older 289 ones 160 CFM vs 140 FOR E7s. I plan on porting a set of E6s to see what they will flow and how it effects performance and economy. Due to thier combustion chamber shape doubt larger valves would help the E6s.

actually, you'll need the injectors from that new to you intake if you put in an ho cam and ECM. Those should be 19# while the ones already in use are 14#. The firing order is different for the HO cam compared to the one in use, hence the need to use a different ECM as well. You don't actually need to change the heads, but it would help if you're looking for a little more power.

Well I actually bought this set up because ive never really seen any other parts for the Mercury for sale here in the UK, especially new parts. I have it all as spares incase anything does go wrong, and if I get brave I might fit it all one day. Getting hold of an ECM (im guessing this is the main cars ECU/Brain) will be a hard find but will keep my eyes open for one!
