    No Spark

    1989 Grand Marquis
Since yesterday i have not been able to start my Marquis after installing my radio , it just cranks and cranks but nothing...
So this morning i pulled a few spark plug wires from the spark plugs and hooked it up to a different good spare spark plug i had laying around, hooked up the negative jumper cable to it and then plugged the other end on the negative side battery and have no spark at all while cranking the engine.. I'm thinking the gas is fine because you can smell it while it's cranking.. just no spark.. now where do i begin to find the problem on this car?

ignition module is the usual issue. check inside the distributor and make sure the position sensor is still in one piece. check the cap and rotor as well while you're in there. If you have a multimeter, check that there's 12V at the coil when the key is on (red wire - might have a stripe). Make sure the ignition module has good contact (had mine back off the module once and it wouldn't run... but it didn't fall off). Autozone can test the ignition module if you take it to them. Would need an oscilloscope to test the pickup sensor.

If you don't have 12V at the coil when the key is on, then you have a fuse link or ECM problem (can't remember off the top of my head what actually feeds that line). You may also need a new ignition switch in the steering column.

Just curious, when you say installed my new radio, what do you mean specifically? Straight replacement or did you do any wiring? Just the one trim panel removed?

I didn't cut any wires.. just removed the stock stereo and hooked it up to a aftermarket harness.. it ran fine when i plugged it in, but when i got it installed the car wouldn't start just keeps cranking.. so i guess coincidence

You can use something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lisle-Tools-...61faca&vxp=mtr

or grind a 7/32 socket thin enough to fit in the recess of the module. You need to clean the surface and recoat with thermal compound. Did you check for voltage at the coil like sly said?

That works. Still need to clean and re-compound.

Do you have a test light? If not a working bulb (12volt) in a socket with pigtails will work just fine to test for voltage. Still should pick up a meter so you can check for ground and or continuity when necessary.

Should be able to just buy a cap adaptor for that, the distributor is all metal and usually doesn't come with the cap or cap adaptor anyway. Plus they're like $70 when an adaptor is like $5 at a junkyard. No need to waste money on distributor over broken adaptor.

If you look at top you see 2 screws to remove the adaptor.
