89 GM knocking sound when cold. What is it?

I have an 89 Grand Marquis with 158,000 mi on it. The car runs excellent, burns no oil, and seems to have a normal amount of power for a 150hp 302.
But I am getting this strange knocking sound on cold start up. It is not a lifter noise, and it doesn't sound like a rod. And it goes away after about 10 minutes of idling or 5 minutes of driving. I have heard of some vehicles having an issue with carbon buildup which in turn causes a knock (chevy 5.3 engines for example). Does anyone else have this problem or know what causes it?

Quite common for a LOPO 5.0. Just keep driving it, it will run forever like that.

+1 no worries. folks have put over 100K miles like that. Just keep the oil topped up.

Mine's personally been (somewhere over) 10,000 km and to 100mph (and 5000rpm on occasion) while knocking. No worries, mon.

I had heard it was fairly common with these cars. And it really doesn't seem to get worse, I would really like to fix it someday though! From what I can tell, the car has been extremely well maintained. The oil is clean, it had all Ford tune up parts on it when I got it, which leads me to believe it was always serviced at Ford. Interior and exterior are near mint. I am stockpiling stuff for the HO swap.......One of these days it WILL happen!

The fix is a crank kit. The bearings get sloppy and the knock you hear is the play in the rod bearings before the oil pump starts developing pressure to float the rod off the bearings. The HO motors don't have this problem nearly as much. Its got something to do with the firing order not stressing the bearings towards the back of the motor as much. I forget the specifics, but the lopos knock even when taken care of, and HO's don't knock unless they've had the ever living hell beat out of them.

Both my 89s knocked. The MGM was beaten pretty hard (hey I was 17) and had over 100K. The Townie was babied its whole life and only had 70K on it.

my Mark with it's HO hums like it's brandy new... the 88 with it's lopo knocks pretty good until the oil pressure builds through the whole engine (a few minutes typically in the cold, 30 seconds tops warm)... both are driven like I mean it and neither show any signs of slowing.

My 91 with 240K on it sounds like a 7.3 until it warms up.
My 87 with 95k on it actually was just as loud if not louder, but it had other issues.
Surprisingly my old 91 Grand Marq with 90k on it was always quiet as could be.

Could this also be the case on a 4.6? Mine started doing it on morning startup only and only it lasts for about 2 seconds.

Timing chain tensioners most likely on a 4.6. They bleed down and the chain slaps. I don't know if thats actually a problem or not.
