    Compression / Oil pressure

Today I had my mechanic check the compression on all cylinders on my '91.

All eight were at 160 lbs. No leak down at all... They all held pressure, we let the gauge sit on each cylinder for 5 minutes...

Then we checked the oil pressure, as I only have an idiot light... (I have the gauges installed, just heven't hooked up the oil pressure gauge yet.)
    55 PSI at idle
    50 PSI in gear

I am not going to put a motor in it right now, as it seems that everything, other than the one lifter not pumping up right away, and the valve guide seals, is fine.

So we will be putting in new lifters, and valve guide seals... (They leak a little bit, Especially the front right first 3 cylinders) That is the only three that are still fouling just a small bit, because of the valve guide seals.
So instead of nearly 2000 dollars for an engine, about 500 dollars will bring it up to specs!

Not bad for almost 200,000 miles!

Well, I'm off to the junkyard for the rest of the stuff I need to hook up cruise control on both cars.... I plan on being able to use the cruise control on the way to Chicago this year!

    Tom...

Is that 50 psi with the engine at operating temperature? If it is, hell that things like brand new.

That was slightly warm, it had been sitting for about 30-45 minutes, while we did the compression check, (of course it was being started and run everytime we did a new cylinder)

Anyone know what the factory specs for the compression was for the 5.0.'s?
            Just curious....

Another thing is, since we put new plugs in it while we did the compression check... It is running great... All sorts of power I didn't have before the distributor change out... (it had alot of end play on the shaft, and the screws for the module had corroded in two)

I actually accelerated and got on the interstate today with out having to kick it into passing gear, and out ran a truck to get into the lane...

factory spec is 40-60 psi, engine hot at 2000 rpm. No idle spec is given. If you're doing that pressure at idle, you have no worries.

OK, thanks... Now, anyone know what the factory specs for the compression would be? I'm just curious....

I couldn't find a cranking compression figure in my 85 powertrain book. 160 is pretty excellent though, especially if all were +/- 10 psi. my freshly rebuilt motor does 175psi if that gives you any comparison.

That is a lot better than any of my 302's ever did, even with half the mileage. What are you running for oil?

The cylinders were all excactly 160.. So I am happy with the numbers we got....

Advance Auto Parts oil, made by Havoline... 10W-40 I change the oil EVERY 2500 miles, with out fail. I guess that has helped with keeping it pretty fresh....
The Police cars have a high volume, high pressure pump usually tho....

Its the regular changes that do it. my Mark VII has been changed every 3k since new, and the inside of that motor looks like new at 227k. never checked the oil pressure, but I don't doubt its fine.
