How do you know if your Fuel Pump is ready to Go

My fuel pump on my 1990 Crown Vic is makeing a whinning noise. I got 90900 miles on the odometer but but the car a 89500 miles. I changed the fuel filter which looked legelected for many years. The whinning noise went down a little but it still making noise. I have her running on mid-grade and added a fuel system cleaner additive to help. so far She's still making the same whinning noise. When in idol she makes a low whinning and on the road and free way I can still hear it.

Is it a normal noise or should I start shopping around for a new fuel pump?

Some are loud, some are quiet.

My 90 does the same thing... but I usually can only hear it at idle because my exaust pretty much drowns out any sounds when im driving...Like 86VICKYLX says, "Some are loud and some are quiet"

And don't bother wasting your money on mid-grade gasoline. It won't make a bit of difference in the condition of the fuel pump.
