Bad news is that since it made a difference that means it was lose before. And though it is working now, it will likely very soon fail, as the damage has already been done. I would not trust it for any very long drives. The tranny won't die completely, but you will lose gears. It is extremely rare (never heard of) losing 1st, so the car should even in worst case still be mobile.

Mine was loose for YEARS (it eventually wouldn't kick-down anymore upon flooring the pedal) and the first thing I did when I got the car from my dad was fix that. Its been fine for going on three years now, shifts like a champ and I found the brass bushing made the tranny more "responsive".
Another note: My TV plastic retainer was WHITE not black.
I found a guide on the net from some tranny place that specializes in AOD's and used their adjustment procedure, using the setting for the Mark VII rather than the TC/GM/CV because I wanted the firmer shifts.
So, simply because its loose doesn't necessarily mean its dead, but the fact that it slips might. Mine has never slipped, it just lost the ability to downshift when the cable stretched. Dumb luck maybe? If so, my dad has a horseshoe up his ass, because it was like that for YEARS, I didn't know about it until I got the car1989 Town Car Cartier: 3G Alt. As long as the pressure didn't go all the way to zero, and it was still shifting, its probably going to live for a while yet. Don't count on another 100k but you're probably not going to have to worry about it tomorrow either. Don't beat it mercilessly, and it'll go for a while.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

service the trans, drain the torque converter, add a bottle of trans-X or lucas then set the TV pressure correctly with a gauge. trans should live for a while2003 Town Car Signature - 3.27 RAR, Dual exhaust and J-mod - SOLD 9/2011

Definitely check the condition of that plastic bushing and the replacement is also highly suggested. Usually with an AOD, overdrive stops working first but direct clutch fails aren't unheard of. Seems more common on a 4R70W and AODE though from what I've heard.
