    92 Vic Intermittent Starting Problem

    I have a 1992 Crown Vic LX.

Every once in a while, it refuses to fire up, only doing a loud clicking sound from underhood. It has always eventually fired up, so I haven't been stranded to date.

This will act up regardless of weather, or if the engine is cold or warmed up.

What is odd is that often the digital display will not come on when it's doing this, or I will get a weak chime when I turn the key to the 'on' position. For this reason I am not confident that it's the starter/starter solenoid.

    Thanks.

Pull the small wire off the starter and clean it's connection, and pull and clean both battery cables. If the battery cables are in bad shape, replace them.

Have done a good cleanup of the battery posts/cables, will look into the connection on the starter.

      Thanks.

I had the same problem with my '92 CV. Got another starter from a junkyard and didn't have any more trouble.

How often was it doing that for you, i.e. the "machine gun" sound when it doesn't turn over? Mine can start up flawlessly 25 times in a row, and then one time act up as described. Then it'll start up again another 25 or more times no problem, and then...

It would usually start on the 4th or 5th try. Wasn't my primary car, so I didn't get around to fixing it in a timely manner.

Well it's been about a week since I clean the battery posts and so far so good. Maybe I haven't got to 25 consecutive starts yet for it to act up again, but fingers crossed.

Well we're back to square one, I believe.

I am having the same problem, but this time appears to be worse. I am not getting any clicking and the dash lights won't come on. Cleaning the battery posts didn't help, but the car will start with a boost.

Maybe my battery cables have had the bun? One time boosting I noticed by touching the positive post with one of the jumpers I could get the underhood light to come back on.

                  How old is your battery?

Not very, maybe two years. The funny thing is that sometimes you can get all the lights to come on nice and bright but it's still a no-crank situation without a boost.

I'm thinking weak cell (cell or two drop out under load). Aka, bad battery.
