Reviving a dead thread here for a progress report... A year on, and my $13 coil is still hitting as it was when installed. Fortunately, I've not had to replace any other ones, but when I do, I'll not hesitate to install the second "el cheapo" coil that I installed a year ago. The coil that I replaced survived the harshest Southern Ohio winter in recent memory, and on through spring and summer, into fall again.

what i noticed with the cheap coils is the plastic is thin and semi brittle around the coils

When I first got my Vic It had an engine light on and even went into "Limp" mode one time. I took off Cylinder 5s coil and saw it was filled with water and didn't look healthy. I replaced it with a coil off my dad's old Van, E350 5.4 with 300,000 miles on factory coils.

        Worked fine ever since.

That is how you're supposed to jack it.
