My dad has that same code reader, it is nice for what it is.

It works great on my '89 MGM and all of dad's older vehicles, but it doesn't work on my '91. I never bothered to figure out why. The wires on my car are all in the correct place on the test connector. Maybe just oxidation on the terminals not making a good enough connection to the scanner.
So I use the jumper wire and count blinks on my dash method.

That's less than what I paid after a $5 coupon with it on sale at the FLAPS.

My brother had one that did OBDI and II. We used it on his mustang and it actually told you what it was along with the code. Damn thing was pricey I'm sure though, but I reckon it'd pay for itself. This looks like a slick deal though, 20 bucks is hard to beat.

This particular one actually works pretty great. Tells you all the data the ECM can report via that connector, it's up to you to interpret the numbers based on what vehicle you're working on (same code can mean different things for different vehicles). Been using it for years on all sorts of vehicles, no issues to report - it's just a simple reliable tool, so pretty much what a dignostics tool should be IMHO. And at that price, everyone with an EEC-IV vehicle should get one and keep it in their glove box. Especially if they happen to have an E4OD-equipped F-series, LOL.

We thought about getting that exact scanner doo-hickey before I jumped on an ancient but gently used Snap-On MT2500 with all the cartridges and stuff. It's pretty neat as it tells you troubleshooting tips and if it suggests to check sensors it tells you what the ranges ought to be and where to find them. It can also read OBDII stuff but I don't have any cartridges for them that I'm aware of.

shit, mine involves wiring up a test light and then jumping wires out, followed by counting blinks from under the hood. No CEL on my car. The Mark VII I can at least sit down and count blinks.

Think its time to buy one. They had a decent price on a set of flush cut dykes too, mine are pretty well shot.

I invested in that reader along with the extension so you can hook it up and sit in the driver seat at the same time. I got both for $24.99 on Amazon. The extension is number 3149 and is also for sale on that same site for less than $20. I would recommend it.
