Yeah right, in all my old popular science/mechanics mags from the 50s American cars were pulling down 19-27mpg.

I saw an article where they tuned a Holley double pumper carb to 20+ MPG. It was doe on a chassis dyno with wideband O2's and Vacum guages and a competent carb tuner. This was alos on a performance motor.http://secondhandracing.com/Home.aspx
