    Autolamp feature

    Another question for the Lincoln experts: my Town Car has a dash cover on it--would that affect the operation of the autolamp? Just where is the sensor--I'm guessing it's in the dash near the windshield, or???

    Also: is it true that Town Cars have a governed maximum speed, and can this be rectified? The speedometer on mine goes up to 120 and it would be a shame if I couldn't make full use of it...

      In your forum posts you say that you have an 04 Town Car. With the way the dash is oriented, I feel that the sensor would have to be in a pretty obvious position for it to work correctly, so it wouldn't be hard to locate. I know on my 89 that the sensor is right behind the rearview mirror.

          look for the bubble with the LED that blinks when the car is locked. it will either be in that housing, or in the small vented location next to that.

            Aha! My next question was going to be "What's that thing in the centre of the dash that blinks?" The owner's manual doesn't tell you. I went out and looked at the dash--there's the blinking light, on one side of it the vent, on the other side a small, narrow slit in the dash--I assume the sensor is in there. I adjusted the dash cover so that there was no question of it covering the slit. This morning was cloudy, and the autolamp was coming on when I didn't think it was quite dark enough for it to do so, as if the dash cover was making things dark enough for it to come on prematurely.

              Yes. If you cover the sensor it will make the headlights come on either too early or just stay on.

                I used to sell dashcovers many years ago. The autolight sensor area should be cut out. Also the area where the vin # is should be cut out.

                    Because the Federal and State laws (which vary) require that the vin not be obstructed. This law was designed to aid law enforcement in identifying vehicles that have been stolen.

                      I hit the limiter in a 02? 03? MGM, it was 110 or thereabouts. I have no idea how to turn it off.

                        Ah, I see. Not an issue here, as it turns out: the VIN plate on my car is well out of reach of the dash cover.
