Box trunk soundproof? Subwoofer question

I started to upgrade the sound system on my 88 Town Car, replaced speakers, player and added an additional amp so far so good.... I put an small 8" rockford sub in the trunk which was from my Jeep where it was a decent bass upgrade. But I wasn't happy with the result so I bought an 12" sub but there was only a little improvement way too less bass for my taste.

I am considering whether it could be due to the insulation or too much sheetmetal?

How do you guys get more bass inside your box?

probably the thick seat padding. Kinda have the same thing with mine. If you can put the sub facing the rear seat it should help.

Well i have always ran a single 15, here is my sub and temp amp rack setup as well as battery and wireing, my first setup was a 15 atomic manhattan in an atrend sealed enclosure, the current setup has a 15 alphard machete sport v2 in a 2-1 fourth order bandpass. I took the factory 6x9s out to help with sound transmission. You can put a set of 6.5s in the rear sail panels to compensate for the rear speakers.

I ran 2 10s in the trunk of mine to overpower the rear seat insulation. In my 93 I cut out the "subwoofer hole" part of the cardboard of the rear deck carpet and back-filled it with a metal speaker grill for support. This helped reduce to 1 10 instead of 2 and free up a lot of trunk space as I was able to hang it from the rear deck below the decklid torsion spring bars. Obviously there's several ways to go about it.

EDIT: added pics. Most are from the 93, but the side shelf one was from the 88. I went to the large box in the 88 first and then moved it to the 93. I now have the slim Pioneer single 10 in there. Still have the twin 10 box, but it's not in anything right now.

70's and 80's full and mid-sized cars seem to have more metal and insulation in them. When I was running my 2 x 12" Ultimate Attitudes in my Malibu, I would have to really crank it up to get what I wanted (young at the time). My buddy's '84 Escort had 2 x 10" Pyramid Super Blues which were roughly half the wattage of my system, but much louder both interior and exterior. Could hear that car coming literally from a mile away.

I can't imagine what I would have to run in the '86 CV to make my 19 year old self happy :-/

i ran 2 15s in my 82 for the longest time, ive since removed everything so i can redo the whole install. for my insulating purposes im using a peel and stick sound deadener. its basically a dumbed down version of dynamat. it comes on a roll, 6" wide, 25ft. got it at home depot for like $14. works absolutely fantastic. i lined the roof, floors, trunk, and doors with it.

I put a layer of that in the trunk but with the idea of helping with my exhaust drone issue. It dulled the peak, but now it drones over a wider speed range. Its inside the doors too. Cuts down on the outside noise a fair bit, but replacing the bad window seals probably did more.

Are you against putting a subwoofer in the cabin (which I'm guessing was the way the 8" worked in the Jeep)?

I haven't hooked up my system in quite awhile, but I have two 8" sub tubes on the rear floors and a dual 10" sub box on the back seat. With those extending the bottom ends of four pairs of regular speakers, I get a nice nightclub sound. I have no need for sound insulation with my setup. It's not like I listen to flute music on the highway.

Not a Panther, but I installed my first complete audio system earlier this year in my Explorer. I did not use dynamat.





It thumps hard, am happy I did my research. There is a lot of conflicting info out there on car audio.

problem with subs in the cabin is you can't put people or other stuff in there. I've honestly given some consideration to cutting the rear deck and installing a 90s factory subwoofer enclosure.

I had a single 15 in a sealed box in my 89 MGM way back when. I fed it a ton of power and it was pretty damn loud.

IMO you need a lot of power to overcome the mass of the trunk and thick seat padding.

I also had it in a large box, probably would have held 2 15”.

Yeah, that just doesn’t work for me. I like things to be hidden. A lot of new cars with premium audio put the sub deep in the dashboard. Both of my cars are setup this way. One has Bose and the other Harman Kardon.
