    Radio plug-n-play

Ok so I want to pull the factory am/fm/cassette radio out from my '86 MGM Tudor and replace with a modern radio only!......you read that correct,,,,,,,,,I want only a good am/fm radio.

Any suggestions? And I do not want to take out a second mortgage to purchase it

I don't think anyone makes anything without a disc player now. That really hasn't been something you could readily purchase in an easy 20 years now. Can't really get tape decks either.

You can still get a modern am/fm only but their complete utter $15 shit.

The stock stuff works fine for am/fm, no idea why you'd want to change it.

some brands are starting to make "media" decks. no cd/tape, but USB/SD/AUX and HD radio.

The reception is horrible, and the sound drifts.........even with the ant fully up?

sounds like your stock one is on it's way out or the antenna connection is loose.

Nobody was making these when I bought my stereo... This one was available as of Friday, sold now.

I have a high end Sony Media/CD/Ipod blah blah in my car but just noticed this bad boy:

Nice clean look.. Could be replacement for current stereo. Reading up on it now.. Yeah, it's cool but not $1,500 cool.

                Radio I have:

That grey one is the 86-87 specific JBL radio. It won't work without the rest of the JBL parts, and it will not interface with the 87- premium sound system. It will interface with any 86-92ish JBL amplifier though. The typical 86-87 premium sound radio looks basically like that with a black faceplate, but the connectors on the back are not the same.

Anyway, it sounds like Toploader's stock stereo needs a rebuild. THey work pretty well when in good operating shape but its 30 years old, and full of parts that last 20-25 years when they aren't sitting in a vibrating oven. There are guys that do that stuff, and it ain't me. I messed with one once. No thank you.

I'd look for another Ford radio. I've always got the best reception from a stock radio.

I have premium set up for stuff with the 85 and down connectors that is up for grabs. One might be rare as its got harness adaptors I've never seen before IIRC. That gray plate JBL Ford radio is what I'm after. I would try plugging it in for SnG's into my set up to see what happens. Just a nice looking radio, premium one too but I like the look of options

It should work with 88+ premium sound too. Basically if the plugs are the same, it'll most likely work. The JBL and later premium use a long flat plug for power and a smaller rectangle plug for signal. The old ones used 2 long flat plugs, one was power and the other was signal. Not much chance in getting one plugged in wrong. Power plugs are the same, the audio signal ones are way different.

IIRC that's what the ones I have are like; adaptors to fit the old square plugs into the flat rectangle ones although I don't think it's got the small square for signal.. When I sold my LTD I sold it with the 87+ style base cassette radio, the one with the display that always burns out. The knobbed AM/FM with pushbutton memory was cool in a retro way but sucked dogs for quarters. COol thing about those is unplugging them doesn't cause headaches with presets and eq curves. You'd think by 2015 they'd have that shit built into memory. My 2004 Alpine did that but not my 2015 Sony. POS. Gotta write everything down.

I just remembered that I have an Alpine radio from 1979 on a slide mount (was in my '67 Gal 500)......wonder if that can be used?
