That is the problem with buying nos parts. Most of the time everything is ok. All it takes is one parts person to swap parts with a customer who received the wrong part. The parts person then puts wrong part in the proper box, then it goes back on the shelf.
Years later the mistake is found.
I still think that part is for a mini ltd/marquis. The CV police car only part seems odd. I have had all those cars.
      Anything is possible.

Useful. For some reason I had the impression that the decaying chrome shift lever on my 89 CP couldn't be swapped out. Glad to know I was wrong. Donald

          Ok dead end time!
Parts place pulled ten boxes of this part number..........all of them look like the one I have, and yet it can not be for the tilt wheel 80-87 CV and MGM/LTC.
Also the small Fox bodies, call for the same part number............as they say, thats messed up!

try looking up a part for the 87 or 88 model years and see what part number you get. Your original looks exactly the same as the one in my 88.

Ya that definitely looks like a fox column shifter. The police panther shifter is the same as the civi one as far as I know.

So can someone tell me what POLICE only means????

probably means the panther... and someone at Ford goofed on the parts list so now everyone follows the same screw-up.

The two look very similar to me. It is entirely possible since this is a replacement part, that a one-size fits all approach was taken by Ford. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if you found some obscure official ford note tucked in some 2nd hand service manual that says to bend the arm to suit if interference exists.

The only difference with police car shifting is most older models have the first gear lock out. That does not mean that the trans does not have a first gear. It just prevents the column shifter and trans from manually going into first gear position. Now since tilt steering wheel was not normally ordered on older police cars, could it require a different shift arm ? These are a couple of reasons why it could be different.

The arm mounting flat looks to be identical, as does the entire arm...........so I am more confused than ever:-(
