    Dash speaker reinforcing?

I picked up a non-cracked dash pad for my wagon at the yard last week because mine is missing a chunk in the speaker grille.
I was wondering if anyone had tried reinforcing the speaker grille from the underside.
I got the new dash pad home and the underside of the grille area crumbled but the vinyl is in great shape on top of it.
I was thinking about using some kind of spray foam to fill the area in and put the holes for sound to come through but wanted to see if anyone had tried anything first.

Does anyone know of a spray foam or epoxy that is heat/UV resistant to stand up to the conditions on the dashboard?

I always wondered about doing that. I'm sure it could be done! Doesn't make sense to throw out an otherwise good dashpad if only the speaker grilles are beginning to fall through.

Luckily the speaker grilles on mine are still mint, which is odd on a 242k mile car. There is one big crack in the dashpad but that's it. The rest is probably in such good shape since it lives under a carpet dash cover 24/7

I have seen guys add speaker grilles. Nothing flashy, just basic ones screwed onto the dash pad.

I had one of those covers on a perfect dash pad. When I pulled it 6 months later to clean under it, the pad had massive cracks in it.

Not sure there is any real fix short of just breaking out the grilles when they fall apart and making something else to go in there.

That's a good idea.. What about like a wire mesh or something? Paint it to match

A friend of mine used non slip adheisive patches for a bathtub. He used a hole punch to make holes and pressed them on from underneath. Kept his dashpad from cracking and his feet from slipping! LOL!

I am a fan of the dash mats once the grilles give way and the dash cracks.

I put grills UNDER the pad on top of the aftermarket speakers. They top out JUST below the pad and actually help support the dash pad grill in the heat of summer. This is on the Lincoln though, so YMMV.

I'll let you guys know if this works, I'll also be wiring all the speakers so it's gonna take a little time.

Put the front dash speakers on a high-pass filter. You're not gonna get any bottom end out of a speaker that small anyway, and a high pass would let it perform better.

Or get an amp with active crossovers.

Ooo. Thanks for the tip. My amplifier has switches for that. I guess I will flick that high pass filter on for the front speakers. Thank you much.

my head units have that built in as well. in the 88, it's actually used since I have subs. fronts high pass at 120hz, rear at 100hz. I would use 140hz for the fronts if I had the dash speakers, but I cut out the door panels and put 6.5" in the doors.

same head in the 93... it'll get 100/100 if/when it gets subs
