Do I need a special tool???

On my '86 Grand Marquis..............how do I remove the head rest? It pulls up to a stop, but there is no button that I can depress to release the slide from inside the seat back.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Take the panel off the back of the seat by using a door panel trim removal tool, or similar. The Christmas tree clips holding that panel on are VERY strong and VERY long as compared to the clips used to hold on the door panel.

Once the panel is removed grab a good sized flat head (length wise) and fish around behind the brace/shaft for the head rest post. Make sure the headrest is not fully up, and then with your flat head pry the clip/stop away from the headrest post and pull the headrest up.

It is a bit awkward for me to pull the headrest up with one hand...having a buddy around to pull up will help.

Hmm...when I was at the junkyard I pulled the headrest all the way up, then levered a screw driver in the same spot, and pulled the metal tab away while pulling up on the headrest...out in came.

+1 on the above. It is the best and safest way. Another way is to raise the headrest most of the way up. Insert a strip of metal (hacksaw blade) down the center where the headrest post goes. When it makes contact with clip/stop, push down the metal hacksaw blade, then pull up on the headrest. Headrest should come out. Don't cut your hand on the hacksaw blade. I would wrap the part that your hand will be on with heavy tape first.
