    New Steering wheel cover!!!

Hey guys I don't know if this should go here or in readers rides but I figured this would probably be best.

I have a 1995 Grand Marquis with the leather wrapped steering wheel. After 15 years it was a little warn but wasn't horrible but I took on the project anyway. I can't take all the credit though, my mom is a professional upholsterer and she did most of the work here I just helped her mostly but lets get to the pics. First I took the old cover off.

Here is the wheel with the cover off

Here is more of what's inside the original cover

Here is the new leather I am using. I would never be able to match the color so I ended up using black which is fine because more of my interior pieces had the same fate and I like it because it breaks up the ocean of red that was my interior originally.

I wish we new what kind of leather it was but we got in by accident so it is anyone's guess what it is but it seamed like the perfect leather to use. It is very smooth, supple, free, and has the right thickness. The original cover had some cushioning but it was like a 32nd thick so I used a 1/4 inch foam which meant we had to widen the strip of leather a bit to accommodate.

All the holes are going to be for the lace. It's not going to be sewed but laced with a braid. It isn't quit finished yet but should be in a few hours so I will post pics of the finished product later today.

Ok here it is. I got it finished today and I like it a lot. It is much thicker than ever and feels like a sporty racing wheel even though it isn't I must give credit to my Mom for making this look fantastic even on here first attempt. We are going to go back and try to improve on it at some point but I like it very much as it is. Here are some pics.

    This is during installation.

I was going to be laced with a braid but we found it to be a bit much and elected a more simple kind of lace.

And here is the finished product.

    Tell me what you think.

Not bad! It is kind of too bad the really convenient covers only come in a limited number of colors, but I expect you'll really, really like it.

I once did something vaguely along those lines by applying a cheap foam cover (the kind that comes with the nylon thong to wrap around it in a spiral) and then putting a cheap leather cover over it. My results weren't nearly as nice, though.

I notice you only have thread holes around most of the wheel, and lacks holes where the spokes go. Was this cover made specifically for that style steering wheel?

I didn't buy this cover. My mom and I made this cover from scratch. That's why it appears custom made for this wheel... cuz it is LOL! I am really pleased with it myself and thank you. I wanted it black even if I could have got a matching color leather but I have come to learn that it is much easier to contrast than to match. It feels great in the hand.

I need something like that to cover the steering wheel in my '92 CV. It's kind of gross because one of the previous owners was a smoker...

awesome. personally I'd prefer a different color, but that's your car, not mine... the workmanship is stellar though. great job there.

very nice indeed. The guy who did my vinyl top said he didn't really like doing wheels because they are so time consuming to get right. How long did it take to make and install the cover?

Well it took about 3 or 4 hours last night cutting the old one off and making the new one to the point of ready to install and it took another 5 hours to install. My mom is very meticulous and she takes her time. This is also her first attempt but you are definitely right about time consuming and painstaking. After it was all said and done I asked her how much she would charge one of her customers for the same thing and she said the amount of time she put it in she would have to charge like a $100 bucks so it isn't even worth it unless you make it yourself or know someone who can make it for you for cheap or free. To me anyway I would never pay that much for it. So I doubt she will be offering this service with her regular business but I think with more attempts she could streamline the process and reduce the amount of labor. Still wouldn't be worth it unless you could get down to like 50 or 75 in my opinion.

I might consider $100 for that kind of workmanship. Gorgeous.
