Switched my 1983 Speedometer with a 1988 Speedometer

well i went to the junkyard to replace my speedometer with the more modern 1988-1989 GM speedometer i like it better, it all was plug and play and the only real difference on this speedometer is where the oil light isit's a engine light and were the temp light it's a check engine light i used my existing plug to plug it in i did manage to cut the end of the plug for the 88 speedometer in case it's different wiring. is it different also if it is can you tell me what wires to hook it up too.

just now know that if the check engine light is on it means i am overheating and the Engine light is my oil.

You do know, you can put the covers from your '83 cluster in your '88 right? All you gotta do is take the back cover off (where the circuit board is) and behind there is the panel with all the warning labels. They pop right out.

they can't be switched the 1988 uses square shaped warning light the 83 uses rectangular warning lights. won't fit right.

what about swapping out the whole side of the cluster? don't they mount to the casing the same?

thinking of swapping the panel in the 1992 belonging to my fiance... she has the one made of unobtainium since it is the digital dash and havent seen any in junkyards or in cars for sale OR in ones on the street
