In addition to sounddeadening my entire floor I also want to add some nice mushy carpet underpadding in the form of synthetic fiber. My dilemma is that I have two thicknesses to choose from 3/16 thick and 1/2 thick. I have gone back and forth between the two thicknesses and can't make up my mind. I am afraid that the 1/2 will be too thick and not allow the carpet to go back properly and I am afraid that 3/16 will be too thin and that I should have gone to the 1/2 thickness. Opinions/ advice?

I'd go with 1/2" myself. I can't see it being so thick as to disrupt how the carpet sits.2020 F250 - 7.3 4x4 CCSB STX 3.55's - BAKFlip MX4

If you're worried about the carpet fitting under trim around the edges, see if you can budget buying some of both, so that you can use the thinner material where you're worried about the 1/2inch stuff messing with fitment.

Well the padding comes in sheets 3 foot by 6 foot so purchasing two sheets would be required so mixing and matching is a possibility and within budget.~David~

true true, decisions decisions...gosh I cant wait till I install all of this. Gonna be so nice. I can probably sleep on it and be fairly comfortable until I accidentally role onto a seat track mounting bolt. I just hope it sounds as dead as the inside of a coffin would sound when all is said and done.~David~

Is this in addition to the stock crap, or instead of? I'd probably suggest tossing the original stuff and just going with new 1/2 all around. The early stock stuff is about that thick, but over time it gets compressed to nothing. They also cheapened it somewhat. Have a gander. The sparse looking drier lint crap is the original 86 padding. The heavy black rubber coated stuff is from an 83 Mark VI. You can see the increased floor cover, and it did make a noticeable difference in cabin volume level.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I would be replacing the original underpadding. Sweet I guess you sold me on the 1/2 inch thick stuff.
BTW the older Mark VI padding is far superior to what your Town Cars padding ever was.~David~

Isn't that the same sort of stuff you can get at like Home Depot or whatever for house carpet? If so, you might want to take a trip there and see if you can get it for cheaper since its not an "auto" part.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Good point. Though I have only ever seen the "density" type underpadding consisting of molded together rubbers at Home Depot, it is still worth a shot to look for the "synthetic fiber" type underpadding on my next visit.~David~

I scoped out Lowes yesterday. They did not have any synthetic fiber carpet underpadding, so my next shot would be The Home Depot. Otherwise I will go for the JcWhitney padding.~David~

Try a real carpet store if you have one in your area. They can probably get you anything you'd like.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
