    auto door locks must die

This shit has GOT to stop.

    Vehicle: '96 Cougar

Problem: The "safety feature" that locks the doors as soon as the key is placed in the on position... this "safety feature" that had my car running in the garage for 45 minutes while I fished for the window button through the door frame with a tent pole, and today left me sitting in the auto zone parking lot after an unsuccessful attempt to pull codes.

How can I disable this horse shit without killing my power locks or my remote keyless entry?

I feel like ripping the wires out of the lock solenoid, but I'd only be pissed later because the stuff I WANT working won't work!

it blows doesn't it? The Mark VII does it when you shift gears, still annoying as shit though. I bet there is one wire that you could cut to disable it, but without an EVTM I wouldn't know where to begin.

Stock thing or aftermarket? My system does that when the key is on. Though there's a code to turn off that feature. And that's just a wire that gets 12 volts when key is switched. If you know which wire it is, you can disable the feature.

Don't quote me, but I THINK there is a code to turn that off on newer fords. IIRC I did it on my mom's focus to stop the doorlock shenanigans. Maybe ask your ford dealer service department if there is a code? On a lot of OBDII fords you can do some weird stuff, turning off chimes and buzzers, disabling warning lights, stuff like that. It's worth a call.

Excellent policy, as this can happen even without power locks of any sort.

My all-knowing suggestion? Unplug the power lock actuators. No more automatic door locking.

              Dear Panthers,
Some years ago I was thinking to buy a Nissan sumpin which had a voice that urged me to perform various automotive acts. I asked the salesman, "How much is it without the Jap under the dashboard."

He comes with the car, you can't get rid of him."

"Then I don't want it - or him. Only my wife gets to nag me."

That would have been "priceless" to see the look on his face.

Now me personally....I don't even have my door-dinger hooked up. I'm really good about checking for my keys before I lock the door......it's leaving my lights on that worries me....I usually walk around to the front of my car to check before I walk off.

Back on topic.....what about adding one of those keyless number/button pads?
My father-in-law has those on his mark VII. If you had those then locking your keys in the car would no longer be an issue.

My mother in law's Saab has this crazy feature where it physically doesn't allow you to lock the doors manually with the plunger under certain circumstances. You try to push the plunger down to lock the door normally, but you can't! Caused me all sorts of heck when I've been sent to get stuff out of it until I figured out that it wanted me to either just use the keyfob or insert the key in the driver's door lock cylinder (there's no cylinder on the passenger side) and turn it. Can't imagine I'd be happy with that feature on a car I owned.

A guy I know showed me one day how his old Chevy truck made it impossible to lock your keys in. He locked the door with the plunger, slammed the door, and it unlocked itself until he locked it manually with the key. Kind of a nuisance sometimes, I'm sure, but an interesting concept nonetheless.

I kind of like my broken lock. The slider on the drivers door inside just flops around and the default position seems to be in the middle, but when you lock it from outside with the key, it goes back into the locked position. I can't lock myself out because the keys need to be outside for me to lock the door It would be nice to be able to lock it from the inside and just run inside the house when it's pissing down rain, but I don't know WTF is wrong with it.

possibly the rod disconnected from the slider...Remove your door handle surround (chrome thing around the door handle) and then look to see if the rod is clipped in/on the little slider thing.

yep, mine is like that. I lost a little retaining spring. I spent about an hour trying to rig it up so the rod would stay in without the spring, but when I realized it meant that I could leave my rear driver's side window down if the doors were locked (the knob on that door is broken off) I just left it as is.
