    jammed glovebox

    since sometime before I picked the car up, the glovebox on Sophia has been jammed partially open. It seems that one of the two tabs that retracts when you squeeze the latch will not retract. The key also will not turn in the lock. I've tried unbolting the hinge part of the glovebox, but I couldn't wriggle the box off of the latch.

    Has anyone had this happen? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I have my only gas cap release in there, so I can't afford to get the box open, then close it and have it stay closed.

    yeah, it happens a lot. Yank, the thing will let go. Replace the latch assembly. Its just a small slide clip that holds it in there. Pick up a few spares next you're at the junkyard, you will need them eventually.

      + 1 on the latch assembly being bad. I've been lucky enough to find the key for the latch too a couple of times.

        After you put a new one in, keep the triggers squeezed while you shut the door. It'll last a whole lot longer.

            I don't trust it to let go, it's already bent the structure around the glovebox out away from the dash a bit, I have a feeling I'd just break that off if I pulled too hard. Am I just being paranoid?

              use a small screwdriver and squeeze the stubborn one in if you can access the top of glovebox and get to inside part of where latch catches. happened to me on 2 cars here. the part where glovebox latches can be bent back up to make it fit right after glovebox is opened.

                Thanks. I took a look and that looks like my best course of action. I'll probably get a new latch when I go back to a guy whose selling me tires, who also has a low-mileage 84 GM he's parting out.

                    I have the same problem....one side's metal latch is broken so I forced it open and temporarily duct taped the broken tab down so it doesn't latch.
                    I picked up a used glovebox latch at the junkyard.
                    Is there a way to remove the lock cylinder from the glovebox latch mechanism and replace it with my OEM key cylinder?

                      Yes. You have to insert the correct key and in some fashion it does come out. While in my junkyard searches I found glove box latches that work with my key!

                          The weird thing is, some gloveboxes just seem to shut funny for no reason. The one on my '81 clicks fully shut nice and easily. :shrugs:
