I would try cleaning them like suggested first. You can disassemble the retractor though it doesn't look like it at first. If that doesn't work you might also want to try getting an assembly at a junkyard if they allow you to. My drivers seatbelt wouldn't retract all, and it ended up being the cable that goes to the door jamb button. It broke on mine since it was bent and kinked in an odd way and I swapped a cable over from a Mark VII.

I cleaned the ones in my 84 LTD by soaking them in some clothes detergent using HOT water... I set the mechanism on the side of the sink, and soaked the belt in the sink. Afterwards, I scrubbed them gently with a small stiff brissle brush.. and they came out like new... one even had a nasty oil spot in it. It came out when I scrubbed them... they all look like new now... I'm doing the ones in the 91 tommoror, getting it ready for another car show! The main thing is you don't want to use too harsh of a detergent, because you don't want to degrade the belts... you don't want them to break in an accident!!!!

Smoker car eh? I wipe my panels down with ammonia & water or Lysol 4in1 & water for that. For the seatbelts I'd probably try Tide, it always works well on the clothes.

majorly. All of the panels to some extent were brown. I've scrubbed the hell out of them, but I can still see color difference between my originals and replacement parts. The headliner itself was many shades darker than it should have been. Somewhere I have pics of a nice sun visor held up to my old ones for color comparison.

Any way to remove them from the retractor and get them in the washing machine?
Not that I know of.. without taking them all apart... and not sure you can even do that. If you do what i was talking about, they will come out like new... It even took some grease stains out that the mechanics at the county shop got on the belts. Just don't use too harsh of a chemical for the soap.. don't want to de-grade the belts...
I agree with the heebie-jeebies!
