leather wrapped steering wheel repair

the leather on my steering wheel on my wagon is completley shot. what can i do to redo the leather? is there any kits to re wrap the wheel?

Wheelskins are really nice but they do take some time and effort to get good results. They list for about $50 on the Wheelskins website but I think I got mine around $20-25 online. Here's some pics of my recover job using the the baseball stitch technique. This method is more time consuming but is the same stitch as the original covering and looks much better. Here's some pics of my job, it's not perfect but I'm very happy with it.

wonder if that wheelskin would work better if all the old leather was removed first.
the orig steering wheel on toms vic someone cut the leather off.......i found a good used blue leather wheel....same goes for yucatech, he got a good used leather wheel from pete v8......i found a perfect grey wheel for gadget too

You can definitely remove the old one first if you like and it'll probably go on a bit easier and have a closer feel to the factory one. I did it with the old cover on because I wasn't sure how it was going to come out, didn't want to commit to it, and their directions say you can do it either way. The wheel felt a little different to me at first but not anything that I didn't get used quickly. My stitching was tight, though a little crooked so the cover doesn't move at all. The leather is really nice quailty and its great not to get blue smears on my hands clothes or get that annoying tacky wheel in the spring & summer anymore. If you like I'll try to find the guy I got mine from. It was a lower price and he sent extra lacing.

the leather is so screwed on the wheel in the wagon that it will have to come off before re wraping it.

If you look at mine you could see there was a chunk missing but it was so worn that you really couldn't feel it anymore. If its bad like you're saying removing the old cover is a good idea since the damage would show through the new leather.

could i not do this with a strip of vinyl and sew the ends together and put it on the wheel? its the same, no?

If you like I don't see why not. You'd also need some of that waxy black thread and a sturdy needle.

I don't have the patience to make it look that good. I'd rather take the wheel out of the car, and have my mom do it, she's really good with crafts and stuff. Oh Nevermind, I just noticed that the cover had the holes already in the material.

I got mine from some online auto store, I'd just have to track down the receipt. The one I used was blue, Size A.
