    Squeaky Speedometer

    Ok, I have noticed that when the speedometer starts to move, and continues to move, I hear squeaking, constant squeaking, it gets faster the higher the speed, so I think it's the speedometer, or the speedometer cable, is there anything I can use to lubricate the speedometer or speedometer cable to stop it from squeaking? It's really annoying.

    Old speedos do this when the bearing wears out. They are a bit worn out.

    I am actually thinking about sending my 140 out to be rebuilt.

      try a new cable first.....should be under 20 bucks for a brandy new one

      1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

        most likely its the speedo cable. You can pull the cable loose from the back of the cluster and lubricate it, but that usually doesnt last long.

        I think you can still get speedo cables from Ford, just replace the cable.

          What's the procedure for removing the cable from the housing?

            stick a pair of pliers on there and squeeze and pull. on the white plastic piece i mean. youll see 2 tabs cutout on it.

                It stopped squeaking, Whatever. The car will be on the streets November 8th!

                  When the car's been warmed up (heat on full), or during the warmer months it'll be fairly quiet. On a cold morning in February, it'll sound like a hampster wheel. So long as it works, I wouldn't worry about it to much. I want to rebuild my speedo and get a new cable down the line for mine so that's something you might want to plan for in the future as well.

                    As long as I don't hear it and it works then I don't care. But I will be sure to grab the cable if it ever fails.

                      Yep, I've been starting to stock up on harder to find parts when my budget allows. That cable is going on the list.

                        you'll have to measure yours before you buy a new one. there are different lengths, for some reason.

                          Have the same issue with Creams at low speed when its cold out untill the car warms up. Ford manual talks about applying some special non conductig grease at the connection end to the speedo. Did it possibly helped some not shure.

                              The stuff was only avaiable from NAPA about 40.00 a tube almost the size of copper Permatex tube. I believe most thick weel bearing grease would work.
