    Window motor gear replacements...

Does anyone know where the link is to the step by step instructions on replacing the bushings in the power windows? I know how to do it, but there is a co worker who needs to do it, on his lincoln, and has never done it... I explained it to him, but somewhere there is a step by step with pictures... And I can't find it now.... Figured it would be good for him to have in case he gets stuck on something...

This might be what you're looking for. Its for a 1990 Towncar, but they're all pretty similar.

Woah, those round bushings are a bit different than the triangular-looking thing I found in my window motor gearboxes. I've also not seen pics of a cable-based window system before. I don't suppose it's retrofittable to replace this clunky lever-type system that's been giving me fits?

doubtful. the entire regulator assembly is different. those cables break and you have to replace the assembly too.

The motor itself is nearly the same as the 90-91 lever arrangement uses. The older motor uses the same gear and bushing system, but the motor itself is larger. They're all supposed to have round bushings, but they squish to oval things with use.

Could those bushings be causing my windows to stick when rolling up and down?

not usually, when they go they just wont go up most of the time. when they get worn out, you'll sometimes get a hitch when it goes up or down as they slop around. If its just not winding up or down properly, try some silicone lube in the felt along the edge of the glass. Mine were sticking real bad till I did that. Works fine even in the winter now.

Well, it seems like slop- it'll start rolling down then hang up... But if I press the button to roll up the window a bit to free it up I can hear the motor turn but it doesn't actually move the window at first. I usually have to roll it down as far as possible, then back up a hair, then down again. Usually have to do that a few times.

my pass. rear will roll down great. But wont roll back up unless you give it a little "help" with your hand. The motor works fine though.

One of the kids was saying "Listen daddy!" and holding the switch in the "up" position while the window was all the way up, and listening to the motor run. I can assume then that this means those little plugs, or pills, or whatever are messed up?

Just a note about where to drill, there are dimples in the door in the spots you need. Look closely and you'll see them. 1/2" drill bit is just about perfect to fit the socket in there.

                            Good thread, Pete.

Edit: Scott's link lists PN 74410 for the gear bushings, and AutoZone.com lists that part number under both the Help! and Dorman brands.
