Very easy. They're held in with four screws that go in from the back of the wheel, and then with a little prodding they'll pull right out.

I recently repaired the set in my new steering wheel using contact cleaner. Once the steering wheel is off the car (important), 4 screws and then the back pries off. Its got some sticky tar like tape that holds the rear plastic section on the wheel. Once thats off, the buttons are easily accessible. I would also suggest polishing the slip rings on the back of the wheel while things are out. I used scotch-brite on mine. I no longer have any dead spots in the cruise when I turn the steering wheel. The buttons also work perfectly now, no sticky buttons, and no erratic behavior with the accel or cruise buttons. The resume button also works for the first time since owning the car.
