    That is sooooooooooooo retarded!

Anyone ever notice that stick-shift cars usually don't have a shift indicator like automatics do? Are automatic drivers flatly assumed to be witless ignorami? Heck, they should be able to just affix a "PRND21" sticker and be done with it!

Yes, 20 yr old ones should be changed. Mine were probably only 7-8 years old so retorqing them to spec worked. You should look into the Felpro Permadry gaskets I keep hearing about. They sound expensive, around $50, but they last and last. Next time I change mine, I'm getting those.

hm, well, you have a point. I've never driven one of those! What was that on, a Powerglide?

I'm told typewriter Torqueflites are the best! Well, except for supposedly having to engage Park separately and the fact that the shift linkage has got to be a huge pain to work on.

How do those compare to these Earl's Pressure Master gaskets I've read about?

Hmm, never heard of those, but supposedly the Permadry's are the holy grail for cars that as Scott said "probably leaked oil on the showroom floor." Perhaps Felpro is just a more popular name? I'll look into Earl's Pressure Master gaskets and see what I can find out.

I've never seen a manual with a shift indicator. However, if you have a manual in this state, and you do not have a shift pattern somewhere in the car, it will fail. Since most things have it on the gear shifter, lots of people I know switch the knob back before going through inspection. Another one of those moronic rules.

Big trucks with Eaton-Fuller twin countershaft transmissions usually have a sticker on the dash somewhere with the shift pattern, but that's admittedly a bit more complex than your garden variety five speed.

Do you hear any noise coming from the door when you hit the switch? If you don't hear anything, your actuator has seized. If you hear noise, then yes, you'll need the little clip.

yes i hear noise. the problem is it doesn't allways lock. the lever on the arm rest doesn't work, so i think the rod has come off and occationaly interfeers. when it does this, if i slam the door shut it usualy will lock.

Yeah, except the torqueflites actually worked. Ever read any of the history on the Edsel pushbutton transmissions? They were god awful.
