    Wheelskins

Has anyone ever heard of or used these wheelcovers before. The leather on my steering wheel is pretty shot, and the guy from the bodyshop made it worse. I hate wheelcovers, and the bulky feel of them, but these seem like they'd work out well. They are the lace up kind (similar look to original wheel), made specific to a vehicle, and come in decent colors. So what do you think? I can prob get one for around $30, the msrp is around $45.

If you take your time on the install it should look pretty good. I'd try it. I agree on the conventional steering wheel covers. Where do you buy those?

I did some looking on the reviews which led me to afterthoughtsauto.com which seems to be fairly reasonable, 29.95 + 7 for shipping. I was trying to figure which blue was best, but since the interior is Midnight Blue, I'm guessing their Blue (Navy) would be nice. Only thing is the lacing is is black, which I can live with. People say about an hour to install.

They don't make those for our cars man...Those are for airbag wheels.

I have an air bag. Are the older wheels smaller in diameter or thickness?

I would do a two color, Navy and Charcoal to help integrate my new charcoal seats.

Are you sure? I checked the company website and they have my car listed. They also state they will make custom covers for applications that are not listed. I'm not framiliar with the airbag wheels, how would they differ? They list 1983-1992 GM as size A, and 1993-1995 GM as size AX (start of airbags?), and so on. Could always call them before I order.

Something is wrong there. Ford says 1992 and 1993 GM's used the same wheel. Airbags started in 1990.

+1. My 90 has an air bag.

They say that their covers have some stretch so they should work on slightly different diameters. I really need something on their because the leather is now ripped, half black and blue and always tacky. Like I said, I'll call them to confirm before I order, and they have a return policy. I still don't really understand what difference the airbag makes? I'll try it and let you know how it works.

Or, you could rip all the leather off, and then take it to an upholstery shop and get it wrapped.

                      Prob wouldn't cost much, either...

                        I don't think it makes a difference.

The reason I mentioned air bag wheels, is because....it's a different steering wheel! That company obviously has no clue when they group together 1983-1992. 1990-1993(4) would make sense.

Those things are molded to fit one type of wheel...if you're getting one meant to fit a 1990 style wheel...it's different than 1986, a lot different.

I definitely want to eventually, I was planning on having this leather restored and repainted but the guy messed it up to the point where there is a 1 inch chunk of leather missing so thats out. I'm real finicky about the car so I'd rather go this route now, and save to get the leather redone down the road.

Yeah... I don't know what I was thinking when I posted that, seriously. I did some painting this morning, maybe that was it.

My brother has an '88. I believe the wheel is smaller in diameter than mine (by maybe an inch), in addition to being smaller in thickness. Both wheels are "4 bar" or "4 spoke". The spokes seem to be in roughly the same place though (they attach to the "rim" in approximately the same location on each wheel). There are differences though... I was just out of it this morning.

Thanks for keeping me honest Boxman.
