Yea, my old one did the same thing, and my '85 does it a little too.

All I ever did (after I had it buckled) was hold onto the strap that goes across your chest, pull it away from me (so the part in the side pillar pulls out more) and just let go of it.

That tightened mine up a little, lol.

Lube up the belt itself, huh? I might try that. Turned out the apparently nonfunctional passenger-side belt in my '79 just had a twist going through the guide, but it still doesn't retract as readily as the driver's belt.

Have gotten the twist out on several occasions it ant easy. My bigest gripe is how many times the seat belt latch spring has busted on these cars. Have had it happen on about 3 ocasionss . Should be a perminate recall issue. Just try to get a new belt. Get one out of another ecar and just see how long it lasts. Another issue is the plastic around the seat end of the belt begins to disinagrate and the belt falls through the seat.

yeah the ones in the back of my car have busted plastic collars and the belt sucks up inside the retractor. I had a zip tie holding the collar together but I think it finally gave out and the belt vanished inside the seat.
