I took her to a shop, lifted her & found out I can pull each rear tire in & out about 1 10th of an inch! As far as I know that's not supposed to happen.

all the cars i have, the rearend has slight movement in them. i would be checking the ball joints if i wer you. usually the front suspensinsion makes a popping/ thud noise when making turns and car hits bump at same time.

the rear axles normally move like that. Its the design of the rear, the axles float and are kept from falling out by C clips on the inner end.

missing/severely degraded body mounts can definitely make for a thump. The body will bounce off the frame.

It is not coming from the frount I garentee that.

I actualy had one of the guys lay on the ground near the frount & I took off, He heard the heavy thud.......... from the back. Then to be absolutely shure he laid under the rear of the car (yes the guys I hang out with REALLY trust me) & he said the thud was from near the rear bumper & the body mounts, also that it was about 10x louder back there.

So I guess I will be getting a couple of body mounts. Roughly how much will I be paying? Can I do it myself or will I need to save up & take her somewhere? Would it be ok just to get the two rear or should I get absolutely all new ones?

Also about the "wheel travel" Are the frount supposed to move at all ?

Lastly yes I will look at the Ball Joints just to be shure they are still good.

if you are checking fronts... you will need to look on backside to see if it is bad tie rod ends, pitman or idler arms. if those are tight and still movement in front wheels ... could be possible just loose retaining nut where bearings are in front. could also be front bearings need repacked.

i had a very similiar experience and finally found that the nut on the bottom of the shock had backed off slightly. couldn't tell by looking at it. it had just enough slack in it to shift a little when i cornered a certain way and make a thud.
hope its something simple like that.

              good luck, Bill

you cannot get replacement bodymounts. I doubt it's the bodymounts anyway. It's probably the shock mount, as mentioned above. Check the upper mounts. Could also be the rear control arm bushings. Ujoints also will make noise if they are gone.

Bodymounts will cost a good bit. Bolts will probably break, and those will require extra work. Not too mention the body has to be removed from the frame.

could it be a rear control arm bushing worn so bad that it lets the control arm shift around when you gas it?

                        [Hijack]
My friend has a 95 Audi S6. Fairly rare car, very expensive to work on. He bought it at 130k from his aunt, who bought it new. When he first got it home from PA, everytime he went around a corner he would hear this awful thunk coming from the trunk. He took it to his Audi guru at the local German performance shop, and they said that his rear subframe seemed like it might be coming loose, and the mounts might have to be replaced. Needless to say, this is could be a $5000 job. He really didn't have a choice, except to get rid of the car, and that he didn't wanna do. So he took it to them, and just before they put it on the lift, one of them opened the trunk for some reason. Underneath the carpet in the trunk, next to the spare tire was a golf ball that was rolling around in the metal well and making an awful racket. His subframe was fine.

I'm sure you've already investigated the possibility of something similar happening, but it never hurts to look again.

I FOUD IT I FOUND IT I FOUND IT !!!!!! I just don't know what it is ......

Everything that I can see in the back is still bolted in & mounted right & not broked....Except that one body mount. So then I ask what the hell is this......Was it broke off or cut off with a torch.....

It was up on top of the "plate" where the upper shoc mouts to between there & the back of the rear seat. It was Rolling back & forth beating the hell out of the under body but it's just dented thats all.

Yea I know now that I NEED new shocks in the back. I had to give some of the guys a ride home after work & my bumper was almost scraping. It had about 3 inches of clearence!!!
The guys in the back both weighed about 150 to 180 each. So at the absolute most there was about 400lb in there!!

Man I swear if anything else goes wrong before I get my trans I'm gonna sell her!

Shocks won't fix that unless you get air shocks.
