Blaze's 86 SVt Vic (The on-going project)
Well as many of you know I went to the track this past weekend. Good news is I did well, passing an M3 and a C5 Z06 in my first session. HP means only so much on this track, since it's about 90% turning less than 50mph. The carousel was F-ING AWESOME!!! Did 55mph in that turn, and yeah the suspension was squished.
Bad news;
Conclusion about front springs.
No direct replacement is going to work. I can up the spring rate to 1500lbs/in if I want, but my wheels rate is still going to be less than 750lbs/in. And pretty much no single shock is going to adequately handle 1000lb+ springs, if they do, it won't for very long. So the solution is pretty much limited to one of two custom redesigns. Either redesign the shock to be mounted closer to the lower ball joint, or strait up convert to coil over with the mount again being located close as possible to the lower ball joint.
Conclusion about tranny coolers.
One extra large Flexalite fanless cooler is not enough. I have my doubts that two coolers would do the job either. This track is the hardest track you are going to have on a tranny. Pretty much all of it is below 65mph except two moderate straits. This means that the hole lap is in 2nd gear or lower, meaning that the tranny is using the torque converter. This generates too much heat for one cooler to handles, and is generally too slow for a fanless system to be enough cooling either. I was only able to go for about 25 minutes tops, provided the tranny started the 25 minutes dead cold. If the tranny was warm like I had come off the street, then 10 minutes and that is it. Now I of course drove more than 25 minutes. I did 40 minutes and I was black flagged for smoking. After those stated times (25, 10) you run imminent danger of fluid coming out from the converter seal from overheating, which I did twice. Luckily the seal came back both times and drove home a happy camper.
Overall problems.
Because of the tranny problems I was unable to complete more than one full session a day. So I only got 1/4 the track time I was there for, which is still almost 60 times that of the track time I have gotten at both of my drag strip events put together. On my fist run on the skidpad I blew a power steering hose out of the pump. Nothing major, just really messy. Got it back together and it did just great the rest of the weekend.
Well that's the low down. So if you want to make your panther track suitable, keep some of that info in mind.
I got one video of me on the skid pad, and a lot of pics of both. So I shall let the pics flow now. If anyone wants any high res pics, feel free to PM me.

BTw are you running the cooler through the raadiator as well, or completley isolated? if its isolated, i'd suggest an auxiluary fan

Cool pictures and story about the track day. Sucks about the tranny fluid overheating.
A cooler will still provide cooling even though air is not flowing through it. It's forcing the fluid through a smaller passage and convection to the air is taking place. Obviously a fan only increases the effectivness of the cooler.
Is your thought to find a place to mount two coolers with a fan behind them? Our radiator is huge...

2: Having a smaller passage has no impact on the cooling of tranny fluid.
3: I'd rather have a pusher fan if I were to install an additional cooler. However I hope to not have to deal with tranny fluid ever again soon. Using the A/C condensor as the ultra tranny cooler has not only the benefit of being large and in charge, but also the fact that (if sealed off correctly) all air that goes through the radiator must go though it first.Last edited by Blaze86Vic; 06-15-2007, 01:00 AM.

Sounds like you really need a manual trans in that bad boy! Screw the fluid!

Ok so this isn't the official T5 post or anything, I'm pretty short on time these days so I'm just gonna post a shit ton of pics. But I have pics of the new seats installed with the shifter fully functional. The pics in the wind tunnel are on our way to the track this past weekend. We ended up working on our cars till 5am and leaving strait for the track, which put us there at around 8:30am. Drove all weekend and god was it fun! Pretty much schooled everyone in the green group except the C6 Z06. The Viper in my group couldn't believe it, but his instructor was my instructor at the last track so he told him not to be surprised. Apparently I scared my instructor this weekend by driving so fast, until I told him that I had been driving go-karts since I was 6 years old. T5 held up perfectly, as well as everything else. The Hoosier Slicks did awesome on the track as well as the Performance Frictions Z-Rated pads. 115mph was my front strait top speed, back strait was so long that I had to go to 5th gear which was zero acceleration.
Got a ton of compliments at the track, one of the best was...
This is sweet! You're out there making all these guys with their fancy cars look like a bunch of homos!
Only thing that broke was on the last session of the weekend some valve for the Power Steering so now the power assist kinda has a mind of it's own. I need to rebuild the steering box to fix it. Still drivable though, just a little floaty steering, and it doesn't recenter anymore on its own.
