My 1968 Mustang Rustang

Decided to go with black interior. Couldn’t get the white to match. Ordered some things to get the windows back in it and the doors together which oddly enough includes the headliner (has to go in before front/rear windows).

The rear of the car and trunk are mostly done minus bumper and trunk mat and wiring. Gas tank in. Fuel lines run. The trunk lid got its weatherstripping which is the first of much more to come.

Today, the kids had their school lesson by helping me sound out Mustang and put the letters on in the right order.

Headliner in. The wife helped on that one. She is crafty with fabric. Left door guts assembled. And rear window back in.






The glass made the left door sag which made it chip the door jamb. Life. The left door fits horribly which doesn’t make since because it’s an original door. The top is too high and the bottom too low. The right door I put a skin on and it’s perfect.

Gotta buy a windshield. Rear window assembly this week maybe? Waiting on a part for the right door guts.

If its perfect you would never wont to drive it. Is strange that the original does not fit well. And of course its all painted now and too late to shorten anything.

Looks great so far. When it comes to interiors, for me...black wins. Blue is a close second. Porno red is close.
My wifes '72 Mustang convertible is parchment and black...

The door not fitting is definitely odd.
Possibly with the proper bracing and coaxing it could be forced to conform to it's space a little better.
I'm betting the floor replacement changed everything just a tiny bit.

Very true. I’m fighting with the part of me that says “do the best you can so that you will never look back and say I could have done better” and the other part that says “just finish this thing and drive the wheels off it.”

The car has been hit on the left front In its past life. Not terribly hard. I wonder if the impact tweaked the rocker panel and made that door fit poorly. Unibody woes.


New news. All the glass is in except for the right door. CJ Pony to blame on not sending the parts ordered (got the order but they left some out BUT charged for it/not back ordered). I may pull the rear side windows back out at some point. The frames are crusty chrome pot metal. New ones are expensive and don’t fit well.

I need to rebuild my brake proportioning valve and get that back on. Water test the glass that’s in it and finish the windshield molding. Then maybe turn to getting some underdash stuff back in there. HVAC box, dash wiring, brake pedal and master cylinder so that I have brakes. That would be nice.

Things are happening.

Proportioning valve rebuilt and installed. The windshield failed the water test four times. Five was the charm. Heater valve prettied up and installed. Some other firewall area stuff like windshield washers are installed and plumbed. Wiper pump installed. Parking brake installed. Firewall pad adjusted and installed. Drivers side vent installed. Dash harness installed. New headlight switch and ignition switch ready to roll.

I pretended to crank it up tonight. That was fun. I like the way the ignition switch sounds. It has a nice satisfying clunk from off to on. Not all smooth like that 80’s stuff.

HVAC box is next. I rebuilt it and it’s ready. But it’s HUGE and the dash is welded in. A/C will be nice but sure makes this part a pain. Wish me luck.

I think I will cut the doors for the factory stereo speakers and courtesy lights. Haven’t done it yet, but the pretty rare factory AM/FM radio from Fleabay wants the two speakers, and the speaker/light grills are installed regardless of radio option in a deluxe interior car (to which I am converting).

That whole under-dash HVAC uphill job is a labor of love. Adding A/C to it with old-tech is nothing short of squeezing said rock and hoping for blood.
The main reason I passed on original A/C for my project. Good luck. Hopefully you don't need Mercurochrome. I know I would.
The speakers and radio will be so worth it.

I had not realized converting to an a/c mustang was so difficult.

It is a factory air car, so that helped. Most everything in the car was still there when I got it. The outer stuff not so much... but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.


I think I am done under the dash. Looked up the vacuum stuff and fan yesterday to verify function. I swapped the heat and defrost vacuum hoses accidentally, but a quick switcheroo got things going correctly.



The dash doesn’t look like much here, but packed it’s full of stuff. The trim, cluster, and radio will go in later. Also a deluxe steering wheel will go in as well. This one looks rough but is functional for now. My kids are excited it has a steering wheel.

I like the look of a clutch pedal! Can’t wait to use it.



Going to put the right side door guts on this week hopefully. Got a lot going on with family this week and not much time for project cars.



The master cylinder is in, which is the last part of the brake system to be complete. I think I could hook the lines up, bleed it, and have brakes. Four wheel drums (we’ll stop short of calling that brakes). That’s exciting. No disc conversion planned yet.

Pedals are looking good. I know them well. I liked how wide they were and how they have the stainless trim around them that I made my vics pedals into that.

They look much better than the fox style in a box! I doubt if I ever get to manual convert a box, but if it happens, I’ll be following your pedal set up.

friend of mine had a '66 that he was working on for a few weeks. Factory AC car. I seem to recall it was an under-dash unit, looked almost like an addition. Maybe dealer installed? Dunno.

66 was underdash, could be factory or dealer. 67 started the in dash stuff. Which looks good but certainly started the push towards “let’s put 50lb of stuff in a 10lb sack” that newer cars do so well.

No progress yet this week to speak of. I did manage to dent the door around the lock cylinder trying to install it. I got it mostly back out, but I am still bummed.
