    My 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis

Hey guys, picked up a new one today. Finally back in a box, after selling my '86 Vic a few years back. Still have my 2011 LX, and the winter mobile, my '15 Wrangler.

Bought this 1986 Marquis from a forum member (Not_your_grandpas_marquis "Dylan") in Taylor (Detroit), Michigan today. Great guy, and honest seller, glad I didnt drive all the way there for a disappointment.

Me and my buddy loaded up the Jeep and left Chicago at about 11 Central time. Got to Detroit at about 5 Eastern, looked the car over, took it for a spin, and made a deal. We then left the car at Dylans place and headed into Downtown Detroit, went to Greek Town, ate, then threw 10 bucks in a slot machine, and walked out with $103!

Went back, grabbed the car and hit the road. Stopped in Jackson MI for gas for both vehicles, then onto Michigan City for a quick break. After that cruised it to Chicago and got home at about 12:45 Central.

Car ran GREAT! Cruise control at 75 the entire time until Chicago, didn't skip a beat.

I need to finish the exhaust as it dumps at the axle now, fix some power window motors, and find the rear drivers side bumper trim thats missing. Best part is no rust! It's put away and locked up in the garage now. We had the perfect weather day for the trip as well, 40 degrees and sunny.

    Heres some quick pics!

Nice ride. Didn't know that's how they illuminated the dash on those Mercury's, not sure I like it.. Surprised I don't know the dude despite being local. This is what I like about going to buy a car. I look most forward to the drive and what I'll see along the way, if I come back with a vehicle that's a bonus.

I'm pretty sure I saw this on CL recently, I thought it looked nice but right now I don't need to buy anything.

Derek, I think he's fairly new to GMN. As for the cluster lighting, it looks like it may have been swapped to white LEDs although I could be wrong. Either way, I never had an issue with the stock lighting in my '89 MGM but both '91 MGMs were unbearably craptastic.

Congrats on the new (to you) ride George!

That is awesome. Nothing better than a road trip in a new car. Congrats buddy!

You sure you don't need to buy something Vic??? We've got a Town Car that needs an engine and a heater core haha. No rust and oiled every year...

Oh. Did they ever backlight the clusters on the pre '90 boxes? I believe crown vic clusters are back lit 88+.

                Thanks guys!

As far as the cluster goes, I believe it's stock, definitely not LED swapped, and yes, it's awful. Nearly impossible to see the speedo needle at night time. The white is from my camera flash I believe on the top of the picture.

Gonna have to finish the exhaust as it dumps at the axle right now. Maybe tips maybe not, sounds good though, and has mustang shorties on it.

Plans are to really clean it up Saturday, supposed to be 60 degrees.

Wash, Clay, Meguiars 105,205, Then Sonax wax, is what I'm thinking. Use my Porter Cable DA with Lake Country pads.

Dress the top and wheels and tires, and give the interior a nice clean, and dress. Then back in the garage until April.

Don't know how those old timers did it. Guess they had better eyes.

                    Had to have lol.

I think the Vic speedos wete a bit better in my opinion. Oh well, minor gripe. Maybe I'll do LEDs at some point, but not a priority

Sounds like a good plan, take advantage of the nice weather this weekend.

'88-'89 MGM clusters are slightly different (at least the face is), but I'm not sure if that would account for me never having no issue with the lighting. It may just be a personal difference. Otherwise, I'm sure you already know, the cluster lighting is dimmable if you twist the headlight knob but if it's already at the brightest setting then it's time to check for burnt out bulbs (doesn't look like any are out in the pic) or LED time.

hmm... Derek, that does sound like something I would buy, but since I don't need it's not likely that I would make a fair offer.

I dial the brightness back, a little easier on the eyes and less heat generated. I like incandescent bulbs. If the '88 & '89 clusters a slightly different it probably is because they're back lit.

LoL, only kidding. Last Ash and I talked about it she wants to verify that misfire is caused by a fouled plug and not a wire arcing somewhere and then decide what to do. Almost got our new rotbox GMT400 truck up to snuff though. Figure she's gotta drive something while that thing is down.

Greek town is a neat little area. I stood there last May or so for a couple days as I worked in Comerica Park.

Looking forward to what the compound and polish does to the finish.

The MGM clusters are not exactly the best for visibility. Silver background, black numbers, non-illuminated orange needle and green light. They aren't usually that bright either, probably the camera is helping some. Makes for a lot of guessing about how fast you are going. Its a highway car though, all you need to know is if you are passing everyone or not.
