ATC has temperature numbers, manual is the old cold/hot thing. They're both a fairly crappy design. Seen many of both type with busted levers.

I was wrong, the pivot point is not all metal. The spacer has a peg(?) that protrudes through lever and that peg is what the arm pivots on.
When I took this thing apart I was able to snap the face plate back on, and it was not as loose as I remembered it being. Although I did break two of the mount points when I took it apart. Since my only plan for this unit was to take it apart I wasn't very careful, so you can probably take it apart and put it back together with even better results. A little epoxy might be a good thing to have on hand.
Here are some pics.
The levers, one has part of the spacer in tact still, but the plastic would surround the metal rectangular base of the lever.
One of the levers with the broken spacer removed:
A view of the channel where the spacer is supposed to ride, you can see gray grease in the channel:
And my flickr album with a few other pics of the unit:

some of the crappy design carried over into the aeros... which is why I did the rotary controls mod to my 93.

I think if you're keeping the original unit, replacing those spacers is the way to go since it's hard to find a unit at the JY that has one good spacer at most. Although I have seen a couple of '92 TCs with both levers . I'm not certain but I believe 90-94 MGM/CV. For ATC you can add 90-92 TCs to that list, I'm not sure if the manual unit was ever an option on TCs since my TC knowledge is very limited.Vic

Thanks for the info. I'll be looking at the climate control and radio this weekend.
Now, some more questions. Has anyone here done OBD2 conversion on a box? Could someone post up a link if it's been done?
I am getting the itch to make this thing a bit more modern. Right now the plan is to use Explorer motor with EDIS, 4R70W from a V6 Mustang and OBD2 conversion. Not sure if I can use Explorer wiring harness or not. Since it's OBD2 I should be able to retune the PCM using SCT software.
The car has 3.08s which I am inclined to keep. I got a spare trac lock that I'll swap in there along with carbon clutches and call it a day.Last edited by Mr Bean; 12-16-2015, 11:43 PM.

Have not seen it on a box, but was done on my 93... clusterfuck is an understatement. Thain, Scott, Ivan, and a host of others can attest to that.

93' would be easier to do because you can just use a PCM from a newer Panther. I am curious if I can use a PCM from a 4x4 Explorer and just disable any 4x4 related stuff via a tune. Main reason I want to do this is to have EDIS and be able to run 4R70W using Ford PCM. That and tunability. I already have SCT software that supports all OBD2 cars up to 2004.
If I want to run MAF I would have to swap to HO PCM anyway so might as well go a step further and do OBD2 conversion. So that's something to think about. I found a complete 98' Explorer motor for 350 bucks so might pick that up and worry about wiring later on.
Another thing I will be looking into is upgrading the brakes. 98-02 big brake swap would be ideal but I would like to keep 15" steelies and install dog dishes. I want to keep the car looking as close to stock as possible. Are there any good brake upgrades I can do while keeping 15"s? For rear brakes I'll swap to Aero disk setup. What about the fronts? Definitely not doing Aero front brakes. After having 3 Aeros, they are absolutely horrible. Are there any OEM offerings I can look at or should I look at aftermarket?

mine went coil on plug... so pretty much everything under the hood was tossed.
