Yeah! That was an awesome little woody Pinto wagon, had a 2.3L with a T5.

it IS window screen, that's pretty much what they put in some of the stock units. Almost all later models have either a screen, or honeycomb in front of the maf. John just got a new stock intake tube from a 2004? crown vic, and it has a built in honeycomb structure in it. I'm sure you could make the s10 work if you really wanted to, as long as it has 5V reference signal.
The screen is intriguing. I've been tempted to try putting some over the outlet hole on the lid of my air filter box, but I've read it's not all that necessary when the air flowing through the MAF housing has a straight run. With MAFs that come with screens, I've read that removing them can cause a CEL.

I've seen the honecomb stuff in a panther zip tube (probably on a Town Car). I had guessed it had something to do with noise suppression, like the warts. It's not something I'd want to bother with for a 70mm MAF, but a screen woudn't be so bad. Assuming a screen would actually smooth out the MAF readings in a panther, would that actually translate into a noticeable improvement?

It...MAY result in a little smother idle, smoother power delivery, and slightly better fuel economy. But to be honest, it most likely wouldn't be noticeable with a stock airbox in there. I have a cone filter, so that makes the air less stable. It's worth a shot though, especially if you have some screen lying around and 15 minutes of time.

Nice car! We were going to buy a 4 door Maverick this past summer. Looked great in the photos on Craigslist but when the guy got here with it we found that it was BADLY rusted out. And the jerk says "It's only the subframe!" What a scammer. That car was a basket case. Too bad too because it only had 44k miles and a beautiful green and 70s plaid interior.

One of my late brothers had a 74 Maverick 4 door for a long time. It was factory orange with black vinyl top, dog dish hubcaps, black cloth interior, 6 cylinder and automatic. That was a really sharp car.

In August of 1977, my parents traded in a 73 Gran Torino wagon for a new Maverick, the one in the photos. It was a 'Special Edition' although about all that amounted to was the partial vinyl roof and the mag wheels. It had the 6 cylinder and automatic. Noisy tappets on startup. The center caps on the wheels rattled like crazy on any rougher pavement, railroad tracks, etc. Very prone to rust, especially around the side marker lights. In October of 1982 it was traded in on our first Panther, the black LTD 2 door.

I've had a partial role of screen sitting on a shelf for years. My place is so dusty that I've put screens on the backs of heater fans (when I used to use them), on one computer, and even on an Oreck air purifier. The screen on the inlet of the Oreck unit catches lots of dust, but the one on the outlet also accumulates significant amounts, so the Oreck units aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Anyhoo, I'm looking to get a Town Car airbox with the trumpet on the bottom so I can (hopefully) cut the front for a CVPI snorkel and cover the bottom trumpet hole. Somewhere in that process would be the perfect time to put a bead of silicone or RTV (or whatever won't flake off into my intake) on the inside of the lid around the outlet hole and embed a piece of screen in it to see what happens. Since I'm planning on going with a 1999 ARA3 PCM for my 2000 MGM, ideally I should also get a 1999 MAF to go with it, so there would be more to the extra airbox than just the snorkel.

I always seek out images of FoMoCo vehicles that were built for foreign markets, because there were a lot of nice ones that we never got here. And a lot of times models that were discontinued here lived on in production for a lot of years elsewhere and retained past styling elements that were changed for the U.S. market.

Check out this 1976 Maverick station wagon that was made for Brazil:

Except for the horrible rear light panel, I like that wagon. In the US, the Pinto wagon filled the small wagon spot and the Torino filled the mid size spot. No room for the Maverick wagon.

I agree it is nice except for those terrible taillights.

Speaking of the Torino....that was still called Fairlane in countries like Venezuela:

First one I've seen with that particular trunk lid....

How did you guys come up with the screen idea? Both of my Rangers had screens in front of the MAF; I just never paid it much mind. :-/

That wagon is neat! I hope they put a rear sway bar on it, or it would have an INSANE amount of body roll in the corners...lol

I got the screen idea reading through tuning forums and write-ups, specifically this: http://www.efidynotuning.com/maf101.htm

The cone filter creates a lot of turbulence.

Tomorrow John's Vicky is getting new 60# injectors, and he's giving me his old 4-hole newer design 24# injectors. Mine are the original pintle design, with one single hole. I'm hoping for improvements, but we'll see! Supposed to be a high of 25 and windy tomorrow!

Yeah, that'd be why I ain't messing with vehicles outdoors in wintertime - if it can wait it waits for enough ambient warmth that I can at least feel my fingertips (so about 60F or more), and if it can't wait then it's time to find someone with a garage space that can be borrowed for the duration of the job.

How has it been over a year since I've updated this?! The passenger side quarter panel and under metal was all replaced. I've prepped the new hood for paint, and the two fenders are getting smoothed out and ready for paint currently.

Got new 1/0 battery cable, 250A circuit breaker, and everything needed to replace what i believe is 4 gauge wire going from the trunk battery to the solenoid. It's always had trouble cranking, and the voltage drops under 7 when it does. This should alleviate that, and be a bit safer with the circuit breaker.

Still a total bitch when it's not warmed out, hopefully John can come over and cold tune it soon. This is the first winter that it's not been in a garage.

I've decided to go with a 2 stage aqua paint, like this:

So anyone who wants to buy some blue single stage paint CHEAP hit me up.

I still have to work on the doors and a few small spots and then it's ready for paint. planning on spraying it this summer.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you have done way too much good work to this car to use those battery cable ends...

Get some crimp on, or solder on ones, and some HD shrink tube. Nicest cables you'll ever make. I did a set on my '75 highboy, and I also did the ones on my 2 door crown vic that way.

I believe I bought the terminals from Del City.

The heavy cable will make a night and day difference; almost like it has no plugs in it
