Any chance you weigh some of your weight reductions? Would be nice to have an idea what some of this stuff shaves.

the welds on that muffler look pretty good... about the same as the chinaman 2-core all-aludium rad in my Mark.

If this is a budget project racer, then I would imagine the muffs should hold up if they don't see too much rain/snow/salt. Though my Summit turbos rotted from the inside out. Cutouts for those glory runs at the track?

I am going to attempt 3" piping all the way back to the muffs and then adapt down to the 2.5" tails.

Just bought some brand new Ford Racing 4.10's + installation kit off eBay. I don't mind blowing up lopo's repeatedly, but I'd prefer to only touch the rear once. Also bought a eBay special girdle too. The Trac-lok carrier out of my 89 that exited stage left looks to be in "reusable" condition. It's fairly healthy with the +1 mod and F150 S-spring. With some new bearings it should be good to go.

Moved the 85 to the back of the barn so I could move this up front. I mentioned I love beaters right?

Trac-lok carrier out of the 89 is fine. Few extra dings on it but no worse for wear.

Alright, 4.10's are all done. They actually have been for a while but I wanted to button up a few other things too.

First things first. Holy crap was there a lot of metal in the fluid. Looked like chunky metallic paint coming out. I can't believe the rear end didn't make any noise. Once I took the axles out I stuffed rags up and down the axle tubes to get all the pieces of metal out that were floating around. IIRC Pete had to replace the drivers side axle and bearing so I'm not sure if it was all from that or what.

Completely nude rear with races removed:

                          Open carrier vs Trac-lok carrier:

Setting pinion pre-load. Came out to 20-25 lb-in.

Setting backlash, putting the spacers in as they came out I ended up with a zero backlash condition, swapping them side to side I was perfect at 0.012", but they went in to easy and I could tell there was no preload on the the carrier bearings. I found some laying around at work that ended up working good. Ended up at about 0.008" with good preload on the carrier.

The passenger side axle was just beginning to fail, so I swapped it out for a good one I had laying around. Also replaced both axle seals while I was in there.

Checked over the brakes, all good and working properly with tons of life on the shoes. Cleaned the glazing off, lubed up all contact points, machined the drums (glad I did, they were well out of round), and adjusted accordingly.

And all buttoned up. Went with fully synthetic Motorcraft 70w-140 since I have a ton of it laying around (free is good!), and check out my awesome $85 eBay special axle girdle! It's cheap and crappy but should provide some addition insurance out back.

A quick test drive in the air showed no abnormal noises and all seems good. A quick power brake test confirmed the limited slip is still working great as well.

Only thing I may end up changing, is swapped to the later model bigger pinion flange, and swapping in an aluminum driveshaft. I have one laying around from my old 91 Marq, but it's currently in my 92 CV, and I need to check if it's been damaged at all bombing through the woods. I'd ideally like to swap in a MMX driveshaft if I can find one for cheap at the local yard. I believe if you swap yolks it should work fine.

I also wonder if the stock PI rear sway bar will be a help or hindrance at the track.
