I should of been more specific it will start to accelerate when I turn the cruise off. I have to turn the cruise control button off twice

pressing off on my 88 just releases cruise until I let go of the button. I tap the brake and cruise will let go. Also, if I hold the off button for 2-3 seconds, it will turn off.

My cruise will act funky every once and a while. "Off" doesn't normally work unless I press it a bunch of times. Sometime "Coast" will make the car accelerate...

Brake pedal is the best bet to kill it.

come to think of it, my cruise acts goofy like that every once in a while too.

I've never trusted the cruise in these cars, since I first got my old '87 LTD CV back in 2003. The first time I pressed the On button the gas pedal went to the floor fast, and wouldn't come back off. I had to hold down the off switch and tap the brake pedal around 10-15 times before it finally let off. Cruise always gets disabled in my cars now. The gas pedal in these cars requires so little pressure to keep cruising, I've never even felt the need to use the cruise even once.

First time I've ever seen those federal investigation vids on ford's cruise system though, I never knew it was such an incredible fail point on these cars. Was funny to see that blacked out 88-91 Grand Marq crashed on the White House lawn, lol.

You new drivers, remember if you turn the key too far towards off in an emergency your steering wheel will lock! Turn ONE notch back, to shut off the engine.

Keep in mind too that you'll lose power steering and power brakes. Above all don't panic! As always in all emergencies, keep your cool. It could very well save your life and those around you.

I know, easier said than done, but the more you think about it and prepare, the more likely you'll be cool, like us old guys

                          Update time. 1/11/2011

So yesterday I washed my car and checked the carpets. The front passenger one was damp. So I pulled it up and it was a tad wet, but I also found 2 plugs that open up holes to the ground. On both sides the first plug closest to the front have rust around them. I just popped them off and I sprayed them with primer and going to finish it white enamel. So naturally I took off all the weather-stipping and chrome and discovered on both the driver and passenger side horrible rusting right in the crease where the door goes against the weather strip. On both sides the rust has a complete hole. The passenger goes all the way to the B pillar and a little to rear. I was a tad concearned but I rememered why I bought the car.. To rescue. However the passenger side had bondo but I think that made it worse. I need help with figuring out how to cover the holes and rust. Hopefully I can find something that soaks into the metal and harden or something? So that's my project for now. This coming up Friday I am getting my engine parts. So we shall see. Rehearsals for my show CATS is killer but I'm doing what I can.

first you gotta get rid of the rust. any rust left behind and covered will just rust faster.

Well Getting rid of the rust would mean losing all my metal above the door frames.. having a gaping hole there... I'll try to get decent pictures too. But I forgot to mention the buzzing noise at front of my engine. It's the pump behind the windshield washing jug and when I turn the key to crank, but don't actually crank it.. after about 30 seconds it starts buzzing. When I crank it.. it cranks smoothy and then I hear the droning buzz and i feel like it's making the engine stumble with ever so slightly acceleration.. have no idea what it is, but i feel like it's acting funny..? What are you guys' thoughts on those fiberglass cloth rust hole repair kits from eastwood. Here's the link.http://www.eastwood.com/usc-fibergla...kit-cloth.html
