My hose was made using a double flare tool and a union. If you've got the tools to make brake lines, that'll do the job.

No kidding. Here I was worried A brake flange I can do. Well if the welded line leaks.
I was hoping to get the box on tonight after fixing the &^$%@ lawnmover (pull rope spool is binding), but when I stopped for gas this AM of course the old girl wouldn't start.
Jumped, driving to work, the radio dies - charging system not working and battery draining. Crap.
Everything's new (well less than 2 years old) except for the alt and some harness wiring. I might be looking at a 3g swap. Damn.

Just be aware that your choke is wired off the alternator. You'll need to tap it into the white/black stator wire to retain the stock configuration, or if you run it to 12v switched hot it will also work, though it'll warm up faster and pull off sooner.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Thanks for that tip Thain.
Alt conversion done! 1G and external regulator ripped out, 3G in. The minor wire mods were easy but did take a little thought. Not all wire colors on the diagram were correct (I think, my compartment is dirty) but heck it's only a couple wires. Used the 98+ F150 wire mentioned. That put the new main fuse right at the brace for the AC compressor, zip tie there, picked up a 32" battery cable, cut off the clamp and ran it over to the battery, main fuse to hose for emmisions crap on fender, ziptie, then to battery. The stock belt was difficult to get on (the 3G doesn't go over to 'loose' as far) but once over the lip was fine. Also I did have to ream out the bottom bolt hole in the casing just a little.
Results? I think the car runs better than it did when the 1G was working. And surprisingly (or maybe not?) the stereo sounds much better particularly at higher levels. Bass is obviously tighter and clearer.
I'll add that to the swap sticky.Originally posted by gadget73For other types of inquiry, more information is required. Please press 4 to speak to a representative who can help you with your question. This call may be monitored for quality assurance purposes.

Crap pressed the wrong button. I also got the gearbox swap 'done'.
It was all pretty straightforward. I ended up using a new rag joint kit, when I priced out the bolts to use the 'new' rubber one it was almost as much as dormans' kit, and I wasn't sure if I could use the smaller one on the existing lower steering shafts' flange anyway. No leaks in the welded line, and I rigged the return line by hand and a foot or so of hose. The box even with 140k has zero slack in it. I caught myself looking at the lash adjustment and smacked myself back to why I'm doing this job to begin with.
Boy you weren't kidding when you said it'd be different! Goodbye to granny pinkie turns. Much more effort overall but, no slack, and I think the stiffness makes for easier straight line cruising. So WIN!
Except for - FAIL. When arguing with the old rag joint (wrong size drill bit, wrong tools FTL) I managed to knock the upper steering shaft loose kinda inside the steering column.
It comes through the firewall into a tube. Hanging on the shaft is a star retainer? Like the retainer that holds the wiper washer pump in. There was also a rubber bushing visible.
When driving, even though the wheel feels tight and fine, there is a rattle in the steering column when hitting bumps etc that is unnerving to say the least.
I suspect the bushing is supposed to go all the way inside the tube and the retainer then gets forced into the tube holding the bushing. Am I even close, and could there be anything else? And, doh!

Bunch of crap update:
Fixed the column, all the sordid details here: http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...947#post665947
Ended up being easy, pushed in with hard finger pressure. With the improved steering box and no column rattle driving it is a joy again. Much stiffer wheel feel, but so much easier to drive in a straight line, and no back and forth slop. Well not as much anyway
TPS died last week, easy JY fix.
Cleaned'er out this weekend, all the junk and garbage anyway, including the trunk. Probably removed 200 lbs of stuff. Also the battery clamps were kinda ugly, with three wires going to the red and the replacement ground being the strap type, so I took a little time, changed the positive with a coated really heavy duty clamp, the neg with a brass one or whatever the gold ones are, cleaned it all up and cleaned & treated with deoxit. Very nice and with the 3G conversion and replaced main wiring I doubt I have any power issues at least.
Changed the visors for some really nice nice JY ones (mine were puffy and one holding rod was broken). They show once again, all Lincoln dark blue is not created equal. The newer visors are darker than mine. Nice though, I'll live with it.
Finished prepping the AOD for install, more incredibly insightful discussion here: http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...r-installation Changed the bushing and sealed up the tailshaft. It's as ready as I can make it. But I've got to do a bit of work on the 03 before I install this.
'Fixed' the display problem I was having with my excelon headunit. As per wise advice I cleaned and treated the faceplate contacts, but nothing. Then I realised the front lighter wasn't working either. Hmm. All fuses good. I skipped to the steering column and during cover reassembly - the display came back on! One of the power wires must have an intermittent short. I'm not proud, I'm calling it a win for now Still have a channel out on one amp though.

flakiness with electrical stuff, especially after working around the column makes me think ignition switch. Worth looking at if you haven't replaced it yet.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Thanks guys. I've been debating changing the ignition switch. Does it matter if I buy a cheapie?
Also, my turn signal stalk is perfect but the signal turns itself off too easily on a right turn. I'm debating changing that switch again when I open the column. Anyone know how to pull the stalk out of the switch?

you may have to jab a pick in there to pop the lever loose but most of the time they will just pull straight out.
Not sure anyone makes a really expensive ignition switch. I think my Motorcraft one was about 20 bucks, but almost anything that isn't a Wells brand is probably fine.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Pete. yes old post but I have the hefty spring isolators as well. Do they get installed above or below the spring?
Originally posted by Piece-it pete View PostChanged the springs, it now sits 'properly'.
High all around though. The real problem is indeed the superthick front spring isolators that come with the Energy front end bushing kit. They're in, and I won't take them out, but I won't use them again. Without them I think the back would be too high. It's nice to be sitting right again! Ride is pretty firm.
One thing, before I installed the 1" rear sway bar, cargo coils would fall out and I'd have to hold them to get them back in. With the sway bar, I had to get someone to lean on a prybar hard and force / pop them in and out with a smaller bar. Not that big of a deal, but I bet it might have been a larger problem if I still had the factory springs in there. I could've fairly easily disconnected the bar on one side, but why? My take, if you're adding a bar, I'd change the springs first if needed.
