Hit 25K on her now! And it only took $4k worth of parts :p

Heat's starting to default to defrost, starting to flop around between the setting and defrost and the coolant smell is slowly getting worse. Hope it'll all be OK till spring when I do the heater core ...

Tranny getting worse fast now. Sluggish shifting, thunking /shuddering, I know, sounds like a Ford tranny but it's getting really bad and when cold won't stift into OD. I believe this is fair warning of imminent doom.

CAN I NOT HAVE TO WORK ON THIS THING FOR 1 ROTTEN MONTH??!

Alright, now I've got that out the way... it really hasn't been that bad. The real frustration is I'd like to spending the time and money on stuff like the top.

Zoomie was kind enough to offer me a tranny he might have soon, but I might not be able to wait. I've come across a rebuilt one with 29K miles on it locally, from an 89 Crown Vic cheap.

I know the tail pieces are different. How hard is it to change one?

Dude, I dunno if someone nuked the transmission in yours by losing the brass grommet etc, but my Blue '91 has the OD clutches burnt out from this. Go to a tranny shop and have them take a look at/adjust it (only cost me $25), THEN drive it ONLY in DRIVE, and it may prolong the life of the transmission, but shoot your gas mileage all to hell.

I drove my 89 MGM without OD for quite a while. Under 60 I could leave it in OD and it usually wouldn't slip out, over that forget it.

Its an 85 so the TV bushing thing doesn't apply. If I have to for the time being I'll just drive it till it dies.

I see that the tail swap is a PITA so dangnabit.

the tailshaft pieces arent that hard to swap the only thing i really suggest is you soak every one of those tailshaft housing bolts daily cause if you dont they will snap like 2 of mine did just ask 86VickyLX wasnt a fun experience it happened even at the donor jy towny they snap and break. soak those bolts every day till time to swap.

Thanks Matt for the heads up.

I've been told no, don't do it, but I think I am going to try changing 10-12 qts of fluid just to see.

I changed the pan fluid and filter last year and it quieted it down some then. Although maybe it killed it slowly

If it does toast the tranny, no loss, and I'll still have the fluid... stick it in the 03

Its not just the tailshaft housing thats different. The shaft in there is shorter on a Ford trans vs the Lincoln trans. Swapping the housing gives you proper support for the shaft, but theres some 1" less output shaft engagement. May not be a problem, but its something to be aware of. A proper fix is either the right transmission, a longer driveshaft, or a spacer to make up the difference in length. Honestly, I'd go for the right transmission.

Ok, if I find a good Linc tranny I'll use it, otherwise rig it up. It's just a big'ol daily driver after all

Anyone know if a 1985 Continental (fox body) has a short or long tailshaft?

Conti ought to be the long tailshaft transmission, and drop right in once you change the shift levers around. Take a tape measure and compare it to yours. The difference in length is about 1.5".

There is no 79 Mark VI, and the Mark VI two door driveshaft is *shorter*. The VI coupe has the same wheelbase as a Vic, but a Lincoln transmission. Its the key to fitting a Lincoln trans in a Ford. It won't work the other way. In fact it would make the situation even worse.
