oh to have been able to do those things when I was in high school. I was a poor boy however (lower middle class... mom made just enough to not get help, but not enough to really help). Now in my 30s and I'm barely starting to be able to toy around with my car. And I may end up getting a truck and toy around with it rather than do anything else to this car (other than "keep it running" fixes). The funniest part about trying to get a job in the little town I grew up in is that I was "overqualified" to work at McD's (stupid managers though I was out for their job). I had to have my mom get me a job at the bank she worked at to even start getting anywhere. Then college came along and my grandparents bought me a 94 Topaz (high school graduation present - used) that lasted about 2.5 years before the trans crapped out and they footed the bill to get it rebuilt and then it destroyed itself 6 months later by downshifting to 1st while I was on the highway doin 70mph. When the tach goes beyond the max rating... that's not a good thing. Pulled myself up and worked on doin odd jobs and then finally finished my bachelors and I'm finally making some headway in getting my vehicles tuned up so to speak.

summary: dude, wish I could have done that in high school... count yourself blessed!

Not that I don't appreciate what my parents have done for me, but they only paid the 1k for paint and then cosigned the loan for the car. I have paid for everything else that I have done with money from work, now I have to save for college so things are getting put on hold. Plus I pay my own insurance, registration, inspection etc. I shouldn't be depending on my parents for everything, and know that I appreciate things much more when I work for them. Ive had a job since the day I turned 16, and have made High Honors every quarter in High school while working 25 hrs a week. Not to worry I will soon be a poor college student with a nice car stashed away (and hopefully not having to be sold).

        <--- classic underachiever
yeah... I was a slacker in high school (2.71 GPA)... made up for it in college (magna - 3.84 GPA)

If I'd have been able to find a job worth crap in that little town, it would have helped. I got turned away from almost all of them due to the overqualified BS line. Pissed me off no end. I am very thankful my grandparents helped out so much otherwise I'd probably still be trying to get my damn degree.

Hey college is important, and having a car won't get you the money to do stuff in the long run. My long term goal is to make enough money to live decent and have some extra cash to tool on cars with. Above that it doesn't really matter to me as long as I have good people around me. This car is just one of those "I'm bored and need something to do" kinda things, until I looked at it one day and realized how much I actually liked it. Bottom line is take pride in anything you do, and keep yourself scheduled. I usually get up and go to school, then come home long enough to head out on a 2 mile run, then head to work in receiving at sears and lift fridges until 9. So I'm pretty booked, and usually only have Sunday "off" thats usually the day I do all my shit like wash my car, tie up loose ends, and catch up on homework. I just keep thinking about 5 years down the road, and that usually helps. I went through hell trying to get a job too, my first was at price chopper and they put me through the ringer about starting on this date and I had to keep calling every 3 days because they were dragging there feet. I stuck with that god awful job until I could squeeze in at sears. Its a fun job, but it won't make for good living. Best of luck with your career and school man.

Thankfully I'm done with school and I'm at that stage of starting to live comfortably. I just wish I had projects to keep my occupied when I was your age. That's my only gripe. I was really bored and had nothing to do to keep me occupied. Thankfully I had good people around me to keep me in line so that I can be where I am now. x-infinity on having good people around. That majorly helps in all areas of life.

Yeah bunch of my friends just got busted for internal possession at a party, they are all underage. Anyway I don't party and sometimes it feels like Im missing something, like Im not living my High school career out to the fullest or something, but getting drunk or stoned just isn't something I like to do (and Im not saying your a bad person if you like either because most of my friends partake in both activities.) but I just don't see the fun in it. I try to stay occupied with my car and work, and when I get to college and can maybe meet a girl who doesn't just want to party, and have an education that will let me do what I want in life, then I think I can look back and take what I accomplished in a much different perspective. It is hard being bored and having nobody to hang around with, fortunately Ive got a couple friends who like tooling on cars (ones got a porsche 944 turbo from the 80s?) he just ordered a swiss performance cam for, its a pretty fast car. Also Im friends with pretty much everyone at sears, and they are pretty straight shooters, so we hang out once in a while.

Raced a Monte Carlo SS today and won... Not sure how hard he was trying, but I know the kid and it was obvious he wanted to race at the lights.

Should be noted the lights in question were on a highway and the speed limit was barely broken because there was another set coming up. Im not and idiot.
